The Envoy of Mr. Vanitas
Suppress your demons and quench your rage
Maintain that false complexion of sage
Pretend you’re all dandy, act like it’s fine
And when no one’s looking, pour some more wine
Let’s talk of sport, and banals alike
Subjects don’t matter: gender, the third reich.
As long as you won’t touch a personal note.
Your thoughts may freely continue to float
Avoid longer answers to ‘How are you?’
Do not discuss the things you do
Beware of all topics of dream, hope, ambition.
We know very well. There is no fruition.
But when wrath comes in the dead of the night
It hisses that life’s only sorrow and fright
Embrace that feeling; you’re about to drown
Relish in the truth, of thy soul’s frown
They’re the only real feelings you’ll ever know.
So cherish them dearly, and allow them grow.
The fruit of your labour will soon start to show.
By accepting your worst, when you thought it’s all done.
You truly become who you’re meant to become.
Hi! This is my first ever full poem attempt. I would appreciate your thoughts on whether it's a complete cliche. I'm least happy with the simplistic structure and the direct approach to the theme.
