On Mortality
O mad and menacing animator,
Who strings us mimes along our merry way!
You who sends us visions of the greater;
To blind us fretting fools 'til close of day.
O what stark and sinister schemes you plot,
Whilst we sup on dreamlike, opiate boons!
Alas! To lift the veil and see our lot,
Is that of worms who writhe within the wound.
O cruel and tempestuous tormentor!
Avaricious miser who halts the flow,
That spirits souls away to sleep forever.
O what abyssal hell it is to know -
This absolute we learn from life's first breath:
To live is to die a slow and bitter death.
