A List of Waits
The rain poured down that Wednesday morn,
the sky as white as snow;
An unremarkable new dawn,
yet little did I know.
That on this day at long long last,
I would receive the call;
With news that my long wait had passed,
but the window was small.
The bag was packed ready to go,
to hospital I raced;
A fresh kidney was ready so,
my transplant could take place.
Though sad that one had died for me,
and I but stood to gain;
It was the answer to my plea,
my health would cease to wane.
I sat alone in that small room,
my fate still not secure;
Today could bring my final doom
or it could bring my cure.
So lost in these extremes I was,
that I did fail to see;
That neither would be so because,
sub-par was the kidney.
From older stock with troubled veins,
and pressure mounting high;
That poor soul's loss would have no gains,
for patients such as I.
To have salvation pulled from reach,
after waiting for years;
Would leave me struggling for speech,
and holding back the tears.
So now I wait with bated breath,
and shall but bide my time;
My life is now a wait for death,
a donor's death or mine.
