Every Morning, Every Day
‘Every Morning, Every Day’
Karl knocked the beer bottle
over that had drowned him
last night. Its contents, seemed
to seep through the floor but
before that - the morning light
that cursed the spillage
reflected his sourly pout.
Dishevelled
he lumbered by
the bed.
His quivering grasp
clutched the covers.
The other hand fumbled
until the Marlboros tumbled
out of his pocket.
Suddenly,
the room was ablaze with fire
the match head burned,
‘a phosphoric inferno’
that sired the cigar
between his gnarled fingers.
Sanguine,
he lingered by the window
agin the summer dawn,
as coils of silvery smoke
shrouded
his wizened face.
