#A Letter To All My Past Lovers

  Did I forget you?

  In the carousel of memory,

does it bother you that you fell

  between the conveyor belt

and the security desk? That I don't

recall our first kiss or our last?  The

  whisper-brush of wings on wings,

  becoming somehow turgid

and tedious, just before the end.

  Did you hope

that I still pined for you? Did you

imagine me gazing out to sea,

wrapped in a grey hand-knitted shawl

like some sort of shroud, waiting on

a ship that would never return?

I am stronger than that.  The moment

  you boarded that oceanliner, I

set about the work of dismantling you.

And piece by piece, you came apart

  like limestone, flaking and crumbling

  into unrecognizable rubble.

  It was so easy.

  Does it annoy you?

  To know that you left

  no impression?   Were you

under the illusion that the castles

we built were not made of sand?

The tide has swept me clean

fresh and new again; no footprints,

  no wayward beach towels, no

  sunstreaked silhouettes framed on

Polaroid Kodachrome.  It is as if

you and I were never here.

I am a Luddite in museums of

industry; an alien tourist in the

Library of You.  Not just innocent of

  all our lost shared knowledge

  contained in these volumes, but

unaware that they are books at all.
