dissolution

Carl sits on the shifting street

like a mad god king throne, wicked high listening to the

tense driving machines honk enraged and sketching

disproportionate beautiful stick figures with the names

and faces of his unborn children.

Just for once in his life he wants to see

a really and truly goddamn dead body, spread out

like so much butter on the asphalt by one of those

blissful automobiles. Or look down the bridge and see blood twisting

into meekly blushing water, dancing out, evacuating –

he has cut his finger. A rabies groan foams out of Carl,

bubbles from his mouth and rests on his chin! He is

thinking about cars – red ones with real beautiful bodies

he can touch. Carburetor – carbohydrate – carbon? His

moustache ferments on his lips.

If his wife loves him, will he be handsome,

will he mow the lawn in half an hour? Could he breathe

any louder than he does right now? That traffic rhythm

is getting into him, oozing through his pores

and evaporating into the impeccably groomed

burning black air.

It has gone hotly dark unusually early.

Carl wants to give testimony in court

so that he can tell the judge, “Your Honour,

I feel so damn happy I could kill someone

and feed it to my cat, and then I feel so damn sad

I forget that other people can get sad too.” And then

he’ll laugh at the judge’s powdered white wig

and get thrown into jail as his Honour laughs

right back at him, pompous cracked and harsh, and then

dissolves into a smoker’s coughing fit – wracked by

great tender nicotine sob shudders.

His mouth’ll be undulating dizzy, flapping

open and shut like chicken-wire

death doors guarded by charcoal men

 with gangrenous feet.

Carl will pat him on his stark robed shoulder

and breathe, “It’s okay, Your Honour,” as

 he’s dragged away calm between

four bowling pin officers. It’s beneath him

 to go kicking and screaming.
