Sober love.
We shared a glass of wine, you and I,
that mingled in us every hot drop,
eroding the space between us
and washing over our hungry senses with senselessness.
Those nights, the firelight in the room lured my eyes after itself
and in the dark reflected off the glass ... the bottle ...
your heavy-lidded almond eyes ... and the uncertain sweat on your neck.
Now the aroma of every opened bottle
brings back those nights,
but it's your skin and hair I smell.
Was I sipping from the lip of the glass,
or tasting a kiss on yours?
Even the best vintage could never match the red of your
sweet and agile tongue.
That bottle is empty now,
and the intoxicating warmth of your chest
crushed against mine has settled,
evaporated from our bodies and distilled into a memory...
a memory as hard as your absence and as soft as your skin.
I don't need the bottle any more.
I'll leave it at the foot of the angel that smiles over your name,
because you were enough for me.
