Horrific fielding. The pitcher just stood there watching instead of covering home. It would have saved a run in a close game.
Exactly. Couldn't believe it while watching. Pitcher is to blame on that second run for sure.
Yeah. My wife thought I was mad that someone scored on a wild pitch. I told her that Wright is a knuckleballer and wild pitches have a higher chance of happening because they are hard for most catchers to catch. But it was his not covering home plate that blew my mind. One run? Okay, that sucks but it happens. TWO? What are doing?!
Yeah I don't think Dickey taught him that part yet
I don't think it helped that they were in a shift.
Regular defense and Bautista probably can't take that turn at third nearly as aggressive. But since nobody was covering third, he was free to without anyone noticing.
It isn't like the pitcher was shifted and he's really the only one that has a play at home in that situation, shifted or not. The first run is a product of him being a knuckleballer; it'll happen sometimes. The second is the product of him forgetting to field his position
it's on the pitcher, but absent the shift, having a person at third might have prevented the run - Bautista may have slid (if he thought there might be some play) or trotted into 3rd without really considering taking the turn (worrying about a throw behind him). He also might be weary of getting in a footrace with the fielder as well (which, admittedly, is a very difficult throw/catch). The fielder would also probably be shouting to cover home as well, so maybe Wright shakes out of his trance to run over.
With no one there, he knew he could make an aggressive turn because there was no threat of a throw behind him - with his momentum and positioning, taking home was trivial once he looked up and realized no one was home. He probably scores anyway, but there's a reasonable chance he doesn't if there's no shift. It doesn't change the blame on the play though, it's still on the pitcher.
Lol, why would there be a play at 3rd there? There never ever would be, so he would never be sliding
I don't think it would have mattered. Bautista has a base coach letting him know that he doesn't need to slide and then it just takes either one of them noticing that there is nobody covering home. It wasn't even close at home plate, so even if he was slowed up a bit, he still could have easily scored.
The guy playing around short noticed that nobody was covering home as soon as Bats got to 3rd, but it seems like Wright could't hear him.
Nah, there was no one covering home. He was getting to third anyways so that made little difference. Perhaps a bigger lead at 2nd
He was bewildered that he didn't catch it.
When the opposing team scores twice on a strike-out. http://imgur.com/tjvtFTL
I love you so much Josh Thole.
I mean the sox did score on a passed ball yesterday.
But watching hanigan catch wright is like watching JP Arancebia catch Dickey
You had me terrified at JP Arencibia.
Thank god we got rid of that trainwreck
Remember early in the season when people (Blair maybe?) were moaning that Thole led the majors in passed balls? Well Hannigan now has 6 more than Thole. Also, Russell Martin led the majors in passed balls last year and he only caught Dickey part-time.
That's the most ridiculous play I've seen this season..
How about that call getting overturned in the bottom of the 6th?
Yes of course, the review crew overturning a very close call is much more ridiculous than 2 runs being scored on a 2 out strikeout. Those are both equally common.
It wasn't even that close... I thought it was a run.
Apparently you and the umpires were the only people on the planet then
Happens practically every game!
Well hey fuck you too buddy
Fuck you, buddy.
Why didn't Wright cover home? Why didn't Hanigan look to home before throwing to first? So many questions
Wright didn't go home because he was anticipating the third out being made at first.
Hannigan couldn't throw home because nobody was there and there was no way he'd take the 'maybe' out at home over the 'sure' out at first.
His thought process is understandable but he still should've covered home
Yeah, but that's why the game is played on the field instead of on paper.
oh dang

"Wright didn't go home because he was anticipating the third out being made at first."
Its called following through. You don't assume shit. Stick to fundamentals and cover home because you don't know what will happen.
No blame on Hanigan in this situation (other than the PB), because if you get the out at first no runs score since there's two outs. All the blame is on the pitcher for not covering home, that second run definitely should not have scored.

Reminds me of when the brewers cleared the bases on a wild pitch: http://m.mlb.com/video/topic/6479266/v33918329/milcol-brewers-clear-the-bases-on-a-wild-pitch

wow, that was embarrassing.
Almost as bad as Baez's little league home run yesterday.
I don't understand how that was a wild pitch...a letter high 91 mph fastball, catcher just whiffed on it.
Maybe that's the play that broke Friedrich
Yeah almost certainly a passed ball. MLBAM caption guy just following the announcer.
I think I would cry for days if that were my team
Jesus I can't take it.
OT: I was at the game yesterday and the person singing the Canadian anthem forgot the lyrics and paused for at least 2 seconds. There were a lot of Blue Jays fans who started booing and singing it on their own. I wish there was a video of it, the second hand embarassment was so real.
I feel bad for that person singing, there have been plenty of Canadian singers who mess up the Star Spangled Banner and are featured on sports centre that there are bound to be those who mess up Oh Canada.
In the anthem singer's defense, we did literally just change the lyrics.
It's actually not official yet.
Wait that actually happened? Wow that's stupid
all of us command from all that he thy sons commands. making it more gender neutral.
not a big change. removing God from the anthem might be a bit more touchy, that will be the next thing they try to change.
It's "in all thy sons command" to "in all of us command"
Heads up base running right there
Knuckleballs man.
What is Boston thinking getting a pitcher that throws 'em. I would disown my team if one of our pitchers threw a slow ball with no spin.
Almost got me.
Kind of weird Hanigan is used as our knuckle ball guy when he can't catch one worth a damn
He leads the MLB in passed balls
I think anyone catching Wright would. That ball has some nasty movement
Someone having more passed balls than Thole blows my mind
And he can't pick off steals
Wow they were basically daring the guy at third to steal home anyway. No one near him whatsoever with the shift on.
And nobody covering home at all.
I feel really bad for poor Ryan Hanigan.
I don't
He's always been a great OBP, great throwing, great blocking catcher. Now he's going to have more passed balls in 22 games played this season than he had in the rest of his career combined and he'll pick up a rep as a bad defensive catcher with some fans. It's just a shame is all.
His offensive is shitty enough where his defense needs to be better.
I understand what you're saying, but he's not a knuckleball specialist, y'know? He could still be a serviceable backup for someone, it's the knuckleball he can't handle.
Is this an MLB first? Please tell me it's an MLB first...
In 1990 the Jays scored 3 on a bases loaded strike out.
what, did they throw it into right field or something?
But were there two outs when the strike out happened?
That's a good question - I would presume so, since otherwise the batter can't run without first open. However, there's nothing stopping three runs from scoring even if the batter is out automatically.
there's nothing stopping three runs from scoring even if the batter is out automatically.
doesnt the inning end once the 3rd out is made though?

The Red sox look like a little league team here.
phillies fan would know what that looks like
Ooooooohhhhh buuuuuurn
I saw the notification for this pop up on my phone. I assumed it was some kind of typo.
:(
It was definitely the weirdest At bat notification I've gotten to date.
Forgot if it was against the rangers but I think I remember someone scoring a run on a bunt (inside the park bunt run). Due to errors maybe 5 years ago? Guess it was last year.
Memory is shit, it happened last year. http://m.mlb.com/video/topic/6479266/v172197183/tbwsh-souza-bunts-for-hit-scores-after-two-errors

As the soaked, brutalized Nats fans quietly file to the exits...
Whats the pitcher doing? As soon as the catcher left home with people running in he shoulda gone to home. He didn't even go anywhere besides get in the way of the throw home lol

At least we won in the end.
They should probably trade for a good knuckleball catcher, someone like Thole with Xander and Mookie going the other way. Pretty even trade imo.
Bring Doug Mirabelli out of retirement?
Fly him in with a police escort again
DOUGIE'S GOING DEEP
Who would he call a homo since Nomar isn't there?
Shaw, duh
Let's be fair. Knuckleballs are truly hard to catch and yes, a good knuckleball catcher would be nice for moments like this. But honestly, the issue isn't that the ball got away from Hannigan, its that Wright (for whatever reason) didn't cover home plate but instead watched Hannigan scramble for the ball and toss it to first base. The guy on 3rd scoring? It was going to happen. But the player from 2nd scoring? SMH.
shit, we will throw in Dickey to sweeten the deal. two knuckleballers on the same team? Frightening...
Don't knuckleballers and their catchers always have to get traded together anyway?
[deleted]
Pretty much
Once every five days is enough, thanks
No, no, I don't think you understand...
#GIVE US XANDER/MOOKIE!
Yea hanigan just sorta sucks all around.
Hanigan is a very good defensive catcher and while his bat leaves something to desire, he's very good at driving up pitch counts. He's been bad at catching Wright, but the way he's been throwing I don't think anyone but Dougie is gonna do much better. I wouldn't be opposed to trying out Vasquez if Wright was ok with that, but that doesn't mean Hanigan is a bad catcher.
When you hit 180 and constantly leave guys on base you better be a damn near perfect defensive catcher.
...he always has been one of the best defensive catchers.
His OBP is generally pretty high though. This year has been a bit of an aberration there.
He's came up with some big hits occasionally.
Hanigan is very solid behind the plate. I wouldn't judge his defensive capabilities by how he does with a knuckleballer.
The real bitch is the insane number of passed balls. It's fine if he's not catching is cleanly. That's understandable.
But every time a ball gets by him it goes ~20 feet.
No way, they have to give up some big pieces for Thole I mean the Jay's gave up Syndergaard and D'arnaud for him /s.
