taxi
The soul of my shoes
burns in black protest against
the pavement,
rises shrieking, unholy.
A last breath twists out
in a sigh of brown fog.
(A dripping crimson footprint –
a bloody clew!)
Within the city limits,
a taxi’s tire screams murd’rous intent:
a squirrel spreads out like strawberry jam.
A gleam in the driver’s eye – a
white nightgown bleeds sodden red through
the pigeon-poop pockmark’d window.
Hark! Lady Macbeth’s a babe –
holds a finger to quiet lips.
Hush. Come with me.
A beckoning flicker of candle,
a sound like wind in grass
(where threat of snakestongue slithers).
I froth at the mouth with
saliva-soaked Songs of Solomon.
Thy love is better than nothing.
Bright lipstick and dark glasses
hide guilt and sorrow ‘neath
heavy crown of Hollywood hat.
Sinuous eyes, half-lidded, hold me –
the door blinks shut.
A rush of air, an open window –
my ears fill with wind &
billow like useless sails.
