A fresh pot of coffee

A fresh pot of coffee on a new day

I push the plunger down, a little escapes

You look up from your middle ground glare

"Why did you do that?"

A wrought iron question

Pinning judgment for an accident

We can't continue this way

So much said in so few lines; this one pulls at my heartstrings in such a powerful way. The choice of descriptors like 'fresh' and 'new' in the first line so perfectly foreshadows the coming message. The following rural image of simply pouring a cup of coffee and idle things that just happen inevitably really puts you almost into a passive state. It so masterfully sets you up for the blade that no one sees coming in the third and fourth line. Then the imagery of words made of wrought iron. The immediate return lash and the sudden realization that there is just so much venom between the narrator and their partner. It makes you go back and re-read the first line in a much more jaded sense. 'We start over each day, but we don't really.'

This reeks of the toxicity of a relationship so bogged down in perceived offenses and unspoken resentment; it's just phenomenal.

To echo some other opinions, I absolutely adore the line

You look up from your middle ground glare

If only because the line reads so satirically. The emphasis of this poem is the very fact that it doesn't start at a middle ground. There is such a strong pretense of intentional slight when such a thing is immediately being presumed to be an offense.

It's that dawning moment of realization when it hits you that the other person is just looking for a fight. As someone who has been in these sorts of relationships it's very surreal. Your poem reminds us that the moment when the gravity of reality sets in isn't always embodied in big explosive arguments, but just in the simplicity of becoming aware that even such menial and simple acts are not without judgment.

You managed to jam-pack so much into just a few lines with such simple language and that blows me away. I can only dream of having the adeptness of clear conveyance that this poem exudes. Well done, thank you for the unexpectedly personal read. :)

WOW! spazznax, thank you so much for taking to time to pick apart and point out what you've enjoyed about the poem :)

I had to think about "middle ground glare" for a moment, and ultimately decided that phrase really embodies the entire poem. Things that seem neutral or acceptable, like the question or the glare, in context can be so much more.. A lot of emotion in 7 lines..

I'm glad that 'middle ground glare' has stuck out so much to every one. Thank you for your feedback :)

I like the escalation to the existential and the universal - "we can't continue this way". Perhaps it has more emphasis as "we cannot continue this way" or "we must not continue this way"

Just my two cents!

Thank you for your feedback. I think that 'we cannot continue this way' would work best, it sounds a little more proper - if you know what I mean.

Short but quick to the point. Perhaps a stanza or two extra there in the middle for more context would of pinnacled this to perfection. But i love your imagery and how you make your point without fluffing up the content.

Some problems with rhymes, but not very important in the context of the poem.

It seeks deeper meaning, and the rhyming would get in the way.

Thank you for your feedback :) You mentioned adding a few extra lines to add to the context, do you have any suggestions regarding that? Like a small description of the setting or a little about the characters?

I was thinking two lines before she speaks that line. Like where they are, or when it is, or how he feels. Something that will jump between his actions to her line, instead of such a sudden jump

I'd leave the mini rhymes, I don't even think they're intentional.

It's subtle, quiet, but powerful. Their relationship feels tense, strained, and at the point of bursting a la an over-inflated balloon. How remarkable a little genre poem can do that. Finally the theme of relationships gone wrong that marks a lot of your work sees a new incarnation here: the mature, "appropriate" relationship that just feels stale and bitter. There's no addiction here, just dryness.

To be honest, any rhymes are entirely unintentional. I was aiming for sprinkling of the poetic on a description of a situation. I'll have to check out some more of your work, as it sounds that you've had a decent look at mine. As always, thank you very much for your feedback :)
