Are most NBA fans casual morons?

Everytime someone shits on him its "he had 2 good seasons", "he is a flash in a pan". I know its really cool to hate on Curry at the moment and all, but come on. Guy was a damn good player since he stepped foot in the league. He came in 2nd in voting for ROY in 2009-10. ESPN had him ranked #13 overall coming into his 2nd nba season and was top 10 the next year. His only hiccup was the lockout year which was a wash for him riddled with injuries. But after that he hasnt done anything but play like a superstar. Seriously some people are just plain stupid or hating hard.

That sounds like something a moron would say /s

When you're dead, you don't know that you're dead. It is difficult ONLY for others. It is the same when you are stupid. EDIT: Fucked up one word that changed entire meaning of quote

2
Curry4Three•

When you're dead, you don't know that you're dead.

How do you know this? Have you been dead before?

3
chunkybearcub137•

Sorry not my quote. Just looked it up. It's Ricky Gervais' quote. But no I haven't been dead. However, I do know that thanks to neuroscience, we now know that certain parts of the brain are responsible for very identifiable tasks, such as recognizing faces, or speaking. And when those parts of the brain are damaged, individuals cannot perform those tasks. It would follow that when the whole brain is damaged, which happens at death, those tasks, and all others which require a working brain would not be possible. I don't believe that thinking is possible without a functioning brain so the quote makes sense to me.

I believe a bell curve would be a very inaccurate representation of the data.

Think about just how stupid the average person is, and then realize about half of humanity are even dumber than that.

63
NoThrowLikeAway•

This is a pretty common saying and all, but there was a recent study that showed that it's even worse than that. The main gist is that "the dumb half" are far dumber than the smart half are smarter.

Intuitively, it makes sense - there are major limitations to intelligence: genetics, upbringing, access to educational material, shitty life circumstances. On the other hand, for the "dumb half", while all of those still matter you can simply not try, or be purposefully ignorant and it cancels everything out.

No one can make themselves so intelligent that they will always be correct, regardless of subject matter or circumstances, no matter how hard they try. You can definitely guarantee the opposite by using the simpler method of not trying at all.

16
TobiasBlumann•

25% chance that both you and op aren't dumb.

3
lguodala•

Recency bias. Curry had a bad finals and now everybody thinks he's a scrub.

34
fatalecs•

Same thing happened last year. He had a bad game in the finals, everyone thought he was meh, then dropped 50 in week 1 in New Orleans.

However, he was very disappointing this post-season and it's on him to figure out why. Teams that can rotate bigs on to him like Tristan Thompson or Ibaka/Adams have clearly been giving him problems.

10
jhueckel•

He was toasting bigs on switches all year. He just couldn't do it in the finals for some reason.

9
1___1•

Probably hurt more than we know

17
fatalecs•

Yeah. Tristan Thompson bodied him, and Ibaka/Adams did it to a lesser extent. We just have to figure out why.

He seemed less tentative to get to the rim. And I don't know why. Maybe his knee.

6
jhueckel•

Also looked like he lost some explosiveness and quickness off the dribble.

5
changger•

Wtf are you talking about curry was shooting 100 percent from 3 when adams was on him

1
JohnnyLugnuts•

He roasted Adams in game 7 of the WCF over and over in the 4th quarter

1
ghaliboy•

He was destroying big switches all season, he destroyed Adams/Ibaka in games 5/6/7 of the OKC series. He was clearly flagging from coming back injured and playing mentally drained. It sux but it is what it is.

2
changger•

Curry destroyed adams wtf lol

1
changger•

Most sports fans in general are casual morons, but it seems like NBA fans are especially so, at least on reddit

21
5thEagle•

Level of entry to basketball and soccer are easy. How hard can it be to dribble and shoot the ball into the net?

1
notmathrock•

Most fans, writers, former coaches, etc., are talking out of their ass on a regular basis. You can't blame them too much, because there are 30 teams to keep up with, and most people aren't going to have in-depth knowledge of all of them.

That being said, the way Curry was written about and discussed outside of people that watched most of the Warriors' games shows just how full of shit a majority of people, even people being paid to give their opinion, can be, even about the most popular player in the league.

Anyone that followed the Warriors could see Curry's knee injury affected his game significantly. Creating space by moving off the ball and with dribble moves is the basis of his offense. If he's half a step slow he's not going to get the separation he needs. This isn't making excuses, it's basic analysis.

What this demonstrates is that on the national media stage it's not about analysis, it's about creating narratives for the homers that don't know or care about anything beyond arguments about who's better, etc.

So yes, most fans are homers, but so are the people in the media fueling their fire with lazy, sensationalist bullshit.

17
DrPatrickStar•

can confirm. am heat fan. have been dealing with morons for years. people just have short term memories. if warriors win championship next year, people will all shut up about curry being overrated.

14
-tydides•

If the Warriors win next year, the shit talking will rotate to Lebron and Kyrie. Its kind of exhausting. I'm a Warriors fan but I wish people would just appreciate raw talent instead of finding things to hate.

2
SomewhatWise•

Kyrie was outstanding in these finals but it's hard to praise him when you have morons constantly saying he's better than Curry.

2
-tydides•

Yeah those people are idiots and the only reason they're allowed to come out of their shells is because the Cavs won. When the regular season starts, they'll shrink away. People like to think the Warriors fanbase has a lot of casuals, but its basically every good or large market team.

4
jivewhiteboy•

I did a brief scan of your reddit comments and see that you talk a whole lot of shit about other teams great players as well, so I definitely don't feel a bit sorry for your situation. Fact is, when a team loses the big one they have to spend a year listening to everyone else talk shit. They don't say Curry sucks because they actually believe it. They do it because somewhere down the line a lot of people high on the Curry-train spent a whole year talking shit on all their teams.

So much hate-spewing. Hopefully the warriors' loss will humble him a bit.

I hate this notion that steph cant play vs physical defense. All year people are grabbing and holding him with no whistles, but every casual fan is saying the physical d of the playoffs effected him more than that injury. Smh

10
Dindinpark•

He'll have to prove them wrong next year I'm confident he will !! I just hope no major teams get injuries so no one has an excuse I want a healthy playoff season

Yes, absolutely. I'd say very few NBA fans really go in depth when analyzing a particular team, player, and/or conference.

...Or it just me and my stoner friends who get baked and go REALLY in depth with basketball haha

5
GuntherTime•

Me and my two friends do. But we also played organized basketball so we look past it. We also actually watch every team. I think the casual fan is a combination of someone who doesn't play basketball often and only really watches their favorite teams.

1
colintw24•

Yes, I completely agree. I played organized basketball as well and feel that it gives me a leg up on most people when it comes to really understanding the game

They must not have seen his days at Davidson. He's always been an electric player. I believe he will come back stronger than ever next season.

again get the fuck out of here. We're not talking about screens, dipshit, we're talking about curry getting held off the ball every single play he's off the ball.

fuckkkkkkkkkkkkkkk offfffffffffffffffffffffffff

NoThrowLikeAway•

Hey, not trying to be an asshole here or anything but I think you might have forgetten a sarcasm tag at the end of your post..considering OP's question and all.

I mean, it's not like Steph's game and season stats are inaccessible over the Internet. They're right here. Unless I really fucked up my understanding of arithmetic, 886 (3PTA) divided by 1598 (FGA) is just slightly over 55%. I'm like almost kinda halfway sure that 55 is less than 70, but with California's public school system and all maybe I just don't understand math.

Maybe your post is satirical. You know what that word means, right? It's when people are sarcastic about a topic to expose ignorance of that topic. I don't mean to be condescending, but it's difficult to tell sometimes if I'm talking with another full-grown adult with working knowledge of the game of basketball or if it's one of those jokester teenagers from r/nba who just started watching the NBA a couple of years ago because they were just a little too mature to continue cheering on their favorite WWE personality. You know the type, right? The ones with absolutely no perspective or ability to discuss something rationally without lashing out or making jokes about the sexual appetites of someone's mother. The ones whose prospects in life are so bone-chillingly low that the highlight of their day is spewing verbal bile all over the comments sections of various social networking sites. Really glad that I caught your joke there, it would really suck if you were one of those guys.

Since I'm pretty sure you're just taking the piss and making fun of the casually moronic behavior of r/nba fans, it would make sense that you'd leave out how effective Curry has been around the rim. It's not like he had the highest percentage in the restricted area of any guard these last couple of years (72.7%), and it would probably be overkill for satirical purposes that he's done the same for shots within 8 feet of the rim (70.7%). It's pretty good that he has a high percentage on those shots, since 65% of his 2PTA are from that distance.

I love where you're going with your comedy - your completely ignorant caricature of a casual moronic fan is so spot on you nearly had me fooled. Great job!

Curry is an all time great who is hitting his prime. He's had a good season all but one year and two seasons that were for the history books

2
gnarcaster•

The average person seems to have no hindsight, they only know what they know right as it's happening. Aside from that, people also love a champion, then shit all over them when they make one or a few mistakes and show that they are an actual human being. It happens all the time, just like with Rhonda Rousey earlier this year.
