Native SS2 + Shout + HotE composition discussion

Discussion

Hey All,

Lucked out by grabbing Apocalypse Shield for Basch on Banner 4 and am now having trouble fully optimizing my team to new power levels.

Here is what I have right now:

  • DPS1: whatevs
  • DPS2: whatevs
  • Y'shtola: Curaja + Memento of Prayer / SS2 (mako rm)
  • Ramza: Full Break + Breakdown / Shout (mako rm)
  • Basch: Lifesiphon + whatevs / Apocalypse Shield
  • RW: Keeper's Tome (shellga, protectga, mirage, shitty burst commands)

This is great and all but the Keeper's Tome kind of bothers me and doesn't seem optimal. Instead I want to use Y'shtolas Omnirod Aetherial Pulse (shellga, protectga, heavy regen).

However, what do I equip for Y'shtola in her second slot now? Diaga? Wrath? Entrust? Breakdowns seem like a waste. In some battles Slow or Esuna would fit in very nicely but can't think of anything solid until that 6-star White Magic Curasa skill or whatever its called is released.

Any ideas?

Put Armor Breakdown on Y'shtola to enhance DPS for your other characters if you have an extra slot. Diaga won't do that much damage and if you are running a solo healer you likely will only be able to sneak in a few non heal turns so Armor Breakdown feels best to me.

Agreed. Armor Breakdown & Shellga/Curaja is what I run when I take physical build Y'shtola. It's the least essential Breakdown but still contributes a solid amount of damage in the long run. It's fine if you aren't able to refresh it right away.

Armor breakdown definately seems like the most generally useful ability to slot in here. Good points about her not being able to use it very often. In the end, however, I feel it should just edge out Diaga in terms of total damage over the fight (for 140+ fights).

Also have SS2 + Shout + HotE (but Leon's).

I'd say you're better of using Aetherial Pulse instead of Keeper's Tome. The High Regen will help a lot since you don't carry a Medica with you. Y'shtola wants Amour Breakdown since the the other characters in your team will be able to deal a lot more damage.

I used to bring HotE as RW before and only brought a medica instead on one occasion after Shout came out. The heavy regen is definitely welcome and I totally agree with you (new sans-medica trinity definition?).

Arc's Renewing Rains could be a better option when fighting magical bosses like Adel. My team is almost identical to yours:

DPS1: Bartz with BSB or Tyro w/ SLG Agrias: Protectga/Shellga/Drain Strike/Lifesiphon + Banishing Strike w/ Cleansing Strike Basch: Lifesiphon + Saint Cross w/ Apocalypse Shield Ramza: FB/Lifesiphon + Breakdown w/ Shout and Tailwind Y'shtola: Curaja + Breakdown w/ SS2

RW: Arc's SSB or Y'shtola's SSB or Tyro's BSB

For Y'shtola, I don't always equip her with Armor Breakdown. Depending on the bosses, I sometimes have Power Breakdown / Magic Breakdown on her. I prefer mitigation over damage.

With Shout + HotE, we can almost hit the damage cap, so Armor Breakdown is not always necessary.

I usually bring Bartz w/ BSB for damage. For special medal conditions, I often bring Tyro. He actually does decent damage with RS weapons and SLG.

Excellent call on Renewing Rain! I will try this out soon with yshtola packing that protectga alongside it.

MVP comment so far!

Y'shtola will never charge her gauge fast enough for you to use both SS2 and Aetherial Pulse, unfortunately

Before I replaced Y'shtola with Arc (got his medica and ssb), I used to run this:

  • Ramza (Shout, Hail): Lifesiphon, Full Break, Ace Striker

  • Y'shtola (SS2): Power/Magic Breakdown, Curaga, Dr. Mog

  • Leon: (HotE): Filler, Filler, Mako

  • 2 DPS Fillers

It's more important to keep up shout rather than HotE, so Ramza got my Lifesiphon. Breakdown on Y'shtola was wimpy, sure, but I needed to keep shout up as much as possible. With Ace Striker and Lifesiphon on Ramza, you can focus on mitigation with other party members early on and Shout on turn 4 (not as bad as it sounds).

With Keeper's Tome, I'd probably give Mako to Keeper and Battleforged to Basch. Basch won't be ready as fast as Ramza (unless you make another Lifesiphon), but I think that's an ok tradeoff for the early Shell/Prot.

He wants to RW AP.

Ah, you're right. I was on mobile and couldn't see the OP while writing. Will edit.

Definitely makes more sense to RW AP instead of Tome. With my above setup, I used to RW Garnet or Quistis, so those are options if you don't need Protect (not all fights require it, such as Ifrit & Titan). Yeah, the haste overlaps, but it at least allows one to get the ball rolling faster.

Aetherial Pulse as RW is what I meant :)

I've been running Ramza with Shout without lifesiphon since it came out and only occasional issues if Ramza can't get an ability in or if he gets hit 0 times. Even then, its just about half a turn of no haste bofore he can 'get it up' again!

I have 3 copies of lifesiphon at R4 as well so I choose to not slot it on Ramza =)

I'm stil experimenting with RMs on Leon/Basch but an ATK boosting RM is fine as only 3-4 lifesiphons needed before he can get that apocalypse shield up. Will continue experimenting though :)

I'm in a similar boat. SSII, Shout, HotE.

I've loaded up my friends list with both Tyro's BSB, and Y'shtola's SSB. I'm planning on honing Wrath to R2. Theres been a few times when I haven't needed a heal with Y'shtola as my WM, but getting some extra SB bar would be nice for earlier SSII refreshment

If our yshtola had her medica as well we could run wrath and pop both her SBs I guess. I'm happy with what I have though! =P

I'm actually glad I didn't pull her medica, I've never got the rhythm of having my main healer also be my AoE heal.

Then again, I lucked out with Yuffie's Medica...

Same as you. Only I have access to Apocalypse Shield and Tyro's BSB as well as the other three.

I can never figure out who to bring because I can't bring them all. I find that my DPS drops too much if I bring one of the Knights and Tyro but I hate giving up the magic blink and 3-stacking atk/mag debuffs.

It also makes it impossible to fit in any of my of my medicas too. Forced to RW it now.

I just pulled HotE, so I haven't had a chance to try it out. My big issue is, you can't start with HotE, Shout, and Wall without RWing one of them, so bringing all three characters to a fight seems pointless. Let alone all the other awesome SB I've got sitting around collecting dust

True. This is why I usually just end up benching the Knights for another SSB for burst damage during weak stages.

Though, It was fun to try out during the Big Bridge event.

For RW you can also consider stackable breakdowns, such as Agrias's, for those fights where enemies have dangerous piercing attacks, and give Y'sh Protectga or shellga.

1
mateogOPGolubaeser - e3mW•

I used to run Yshtola with shellga/protectga but that would mean one of my DPS would need to have White4 to run the other shellga/protectga. Not doing this allows more versatility, more dps and usually a quicker mitigation-setup time so I'm switching to it.

1
Kindread21Eiko•

Well I'm not suggesting always doing this, rather just remember it's an option for when the situation arises.

1
mateogOPGolubaeser - e3mW•

Fair enough. I usually run Auron with Riot Blade SSB (ATK/DEF down) so it definately is a valid point for my team comp as stacking just gets slightly exponentially better as you stack more breaks.

give her the platinum shield and R2-3 Holy if you're going to go with RWing her SSB. From what I've seen It's all about the future 6* white magics, but even after that happens you still are left with the question of what to do with all these 5* white orbs. Is there a Q here really? you only need a few for PChain leaving still like maybe 80, and maybe someday far away we can convert them into 6* crystals but that's a big maybe. So leaving us stuck with either Arise or Holy and so I know where the 99% of us are going, so yeah no Q really at all, and no point in putting it off either, it's not like those MIO are good for much and don't 5* Knights have enough other options besides SC to use up their 2 slots on?

So that's where it's at overseas even. For now anyways, It goes great with a Curaise in place of curaja and Devout's double proc RM2. Go Go Y'shtola Plexiglass cannon!!!

Did that just happen? Holy shit spams batman! Double tapping managed a fully healed ressurection, right after a blast from double barrel 12x+20% shotgun... Um, I think I may be turning Furry bro.

mateogOPGolubaeser - e3mW•

There was a Q and couple of answers. RWing Renewing rains with protectga or RWing aetherial pulse with armor breakdown or holy is nice too =)

I feel your pain.

I am in the same situation but I also have Tyro's BSB. Don't overlook those burst commands, if you layer it with breakdown and full break, it can further reduce incoming damage behind a wall+HotE/AS. Combined with a heavy regen, you are practically invincible while everything is up.

I end up just benching Leon/Basch for another SSB user and handing Y'shtola Curaja and Wrath to keep up SSII. RW a Medica or Heavy regen.
