August 2016 Festivals and Events

Late as always, and not yet complete. I still have to look through the smaller festival listings. I'm not listing fireworks, they are well covered by WalkerPlus (Japanese) and Yumemakura (English).

Also, for those interested, tonight (8/2) is 50% off drinks at the Hub and 82 Ale and this Thursday (8/4) is 50% of drinks at any LION chain bar. That includes Ginza Lion, Yebisu Bar, Dubliners, etc.

Should probably include Comiket even though sending people there is a bit of a crime. Summer Sonic as well if there are any tickets left?

I must have equated Comiket and Comita when scanning through lists; I'll add it.

I'm going to skip concerts though. Last time I did that I didn't know at what level to stop, kind of like fireworks.

That's fair - to be honest Summer Sonic is the only concert I would include in this list, only because it's got so many Western acts and draws a big expat crowd.

Are any of the events between the 11th and the 22nd like the types of festivals you'd see in anime (food stalls, carnival games, souvenir shops, etc.)?

Many of the fireworks events listed in the first link of OP's post will have those things, although the larger events have between half a million and a million people attending so it's not exactly a homely festival environment - you'll want to go to a smaller event for that.

Additionally, almost every neighbourhood in Tokyo will have a small local festival during July or August (there'll probably be at least two or three within walking distance of anywhere in the city); there are hundreds and hundreds of these events, so it's worth looking around your area for posters (the kanji you want is 祭り) or asking locals for help finding the festivals.

As u/hachihoshino mentions, fireworks would probably cover most of those. Awa Odori is also really entertaining and worth checking out.

For any particular festival above, a google image search of the Japanese name (without 2016) will give a good idea of what it's like.

Slightly niche, perhaps, but Shinjuku Ni-chome's Rainbow Matsuri is on the 14th and is usually a pretty fun event - kinda like a mix between a Pride event and a traditional festival: http://www.2-choume.net/お知らせ/
