"But some things you do, you don't do for you"- is a great line.

351
siphillisSpurs•

Jordan Brand has always nailed the closing line:

  • "I've failed over and over and over again in my life, and that is why I succeed."

  • "I have something more important than courage; I have patience. I will become what I know I am."

  • "Maybe I destroyed the game, or maybe you're just making excuses."

  • "Tell me I'm older, tell me I'm slower, tell me I can no longer fly. I want you to."

Reminds me of once someone asking Jordan if he can really fly and he said "Yeah, for a little while"

This is a great clap back for Lebron dick riders. Especially when he downplayed the GOAT's performance in the finals.

It's rumored that the commercial was a response to LeBron's infamous "What Should I Do?" ad.

-2†

I work at the ad agency that does work for Nike and Jordan Brand. We are all as one, working on both brands jointly. No one is disparaging anyone within the Nike family. Just some great writing by some very talented men and women trying to uphold the brand belief of bringing inspiration and innovation to athletes.

And then turning around and making some lighthearted Old Spice commercials, because writing inspirational pieces for Nike and Brand Jordan is extremely difficult and taxing, and it's nice to have a little break.

36

Couldn't be because the Jordan commercial came out before the LeBron one

And thats is why gold medals means more to him than a ring to Melo.

55
azizinator25Knicks•

I don't think that's true. I'm pretty sure a ring for NY and a ride down the canyon of heroes would mean everything to Melo. He just thinks they are meaningful, and if he ends his career without a rig, 3 golds for team USA is a fine consolation prize

12
clydebinoKings•

Its more than just a consolation prize for him. Barnes rode the bench, to him the Olympics is a consolation prize compared to his rings. Melo is going to say his medals mean more because he was a key player for 3 gold medals while he's never been to the finals. Yea if he wins one, but the reality is in the present which goes back to why medals are bigger than rings in his perspective.

28
number9_number9•

Team USA could have made up 3-4 different teams and still won gold. No player on the team meant the difference betweenn winning gold or not.

-20
clydebinoKings•

Im sure we said the same with Athens too huh🤔 Melo was part of the change he experienced first hand 3 gold medals and 0 finals appearances. I get why medals hold more space in his heart, but when someone hasn't been to the top of his profession how can you say the glory of a medal is bigger than a ring? You need the yang to the ying to truly compare his emotions and you are ignorant about that.

2†

Only an American without a ring would say that

4
Donta_GOATtowerThunder•

He's become at peace with the fact that he will not get a ring so that's why he's saying all this about the medals. He'd trade them all for a ring in a heartbeat and any sane person who played on USA would do the same.

-6†
clydebinoKings•

At what point do I disagree about that? I clearly a knowledge that and at the same time I'm playing devil's advocate. The Olympics is a tournament. The nba is his career, if someone legitimately says they don't want to be the top player in their profession they are a disgrace to themselves. Melo has never said that. Everything he is saying is about experience. Please show me footage of Melo in the finals so I can actually gauge his passion between one or the other. However since there is zer0 footage you absolutely cannot gauge what is bigger and what isn't by chain of events. Simple as that.

3†
Donta_GOATtowerThunder•

At what point did you disagree with that? The last sentence you typed, idc what anybody says there is no way they truthfully believe a medal is better than a ring you are beating up on scrubs blowing people out by 40 playing inferior talent throughout the entire tournament. If that gives you a better feeling than a ring against people around your skill level I question that player's brain.

1
clydebinoKings•

So now you are pucking and choosing words outta my mouth?? I said he's never experienced a FINALS lost or win while he's a professional in the top league. Quit fucking grasping for straws.

9
nevillebanksPistons•

I don't think Olympic performance has any effect on HoF candidacy for any American. I mean Manu obviously benefits from it as did Oscar Schmidt and Sabonis, but anyone who is good enough to be one of the leaders for the US team is already a lock for the HoF. I mean no one is going to bring up the Olympics when making a case for Chris Bosh or Kevin Love or Deron Williams.

6†
mick_jaggers_penisWarriors•

Is Deron Williams going to the HOF? I dunno about that. He had a few years there where he was in the debate for top PG in the league but I think he may end up being one of the better guys in the Hall of very good. I dont think his career was ever really the same after his playoff runs with the Jazz

17
CommandersLogWarriors•

Bosh is a lock for HoF though.

9
srs_house[OKC] Russell Westbrook•

I assumed they meant that, in a vacuum, they won't do that. That doing well in the Olympics doesn't impact your NBA legacy, or your NBA performance. They'll have some kind of impact on your basketball legacy, though, and that's what the HoF looks at.

Basketball Reference already has him as a 95% likelihood for the HOF, which basically means he's a lock. IMO he's a probably a lock for first ballot too. He may not have a ring, but he's been on some very good teams and has been one of the most elite scorers in the NBA for most of his career.

scarrylary[CLE] Matthew Dellavedova•

He was basically a lock after one gold when you include his college ring as Well

5
Toront06Raptors•

That's the only part I don't like. His 3 gold medals, along with a stellar 13 year nba career easily puts him in the HOF. Probably wasn't intended that way but to me it sounds like they're saying he isn't going to make it.

Only Westbrook and Harden should be criticized in this scenario. Both Lebron and Steph have genuine excuses and back-to-back finals appearances with very little rest. Lebron has been to 6 straight finals and has already won gold for the national team. Steph has been dealing with injuries so he has a legit excuse too.

16

Harden has led the league in minutes for 2 straight years, and they have no shortage of talented guards.

There are way more players who declined and they were still able to win gold easily, but you just listed 3 who have great reasons to skip.

LeBron: 6 straight Finals

Curry: 2 straight Finals and injury

Harden: 2 straight years leading league in minutes

1
hyenahart•

It means more to every other country. It's just the US that don't respect it as much, which is fair because we've never not been favorite to win. The real question would be how does Manu Ginobili if a ring or a medal is more important. I'm not saying I know which he'd personally favor, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if he said Gold Medal.
