Some of the stuff from the Korean GG just sounds so hyperbolic it's on "GamerGate killed Brianna's dog" levels of absurdity. Mass murder plots, terrorist attacks, etc, all being carried out to the thunderous applause of the SJW media...it sounds farcical. And we have so little real insight into what's going on over there, I just...I'm very hesitant to listen and believe some of this crazy crap without very solid confirmation, a chan story is not that.

yeah there was that whole 'feminists poisoning their bosses' coffee' thing as well. I spoke to a korean girl and she told me that was bullshit. She was an SJW though, so.... it's hard to really know what the fuck the stiuation is.

let's not forget that kindergarten teacher raping students, because FEMINISM !!!

Also, is this really the 'Korean Gamergate'?
Sure Gamergate has extended itself to a more general anti-SJW group instead of anti-SJW in video games (or originally ethics in video game journalism).
But this stuff (if true) is on another level and some small (because yes, we are still very small when talking about the world) internet hashtag is going to do what exactly?

Can someone ELI5 what the hell is going on here, and what this has anything to do with Gamergate?

The feud between the Korean right and Korean left is something that spans back to the Korean independence movement and I can write a book about just that topic alone, so I'll just explain what Ilbe (the site anon's talking about) is and what happened.

Still a tl;dr warning, most of it is just context so skip to the last two paragraphs if you want the direct answer.

Ilbe (or 일간베스트, meaning Daily Best) is a web board in a similar fashion to reddit and 4chan. If 4chan (most notably /pol/) is mostly right-leaning and reddit (most notably r/Europe) is mostly left-leaning, ilbe is a hard-right leaning site. Their 'downvotes' are called "민주화," meaning "Democratize." Korean right-wingers have very nationalistic stance, meaning that they are heavily against co-operation with North Korea (ironically, they're mostly friendly toward Japan). Ilbe, just like any internet boards, take this to the extreme (whether this is for exaggeration or serious is a very fine line) and they usually do things like deface/disrespect Comfort Women statues. It was even more of a problem when an Ilbe user spotted a middle-school student using OU (오늘에유머, or Today's Humor), a left-leaning counterpart to Ilbe, on his phone. So the Ilbe user took a video of himself beating up the middle-schooler and posted it on the site, which garnered negative media attention.

While the Western Left accuses the Western Right (or a collection of people like us) for being misogynistic with almost baseless claims, folks on Ilbe actually do make quite a few misogynistic posts, calling all Korean women, even celebrities, 김치년 literally 'Kimchi Bitches' for their purported stereotype of being vain and only caring about superficial looks when looking for a guy. It should be noted that this isn't something that only Ilbe does, a lot of Korean men do this and really, both men and women in Korea are at fault here (as part of the 'Kimchi Bitch' stereotype is very true in Korean society).

Most right-wing South Koreans have a sense of paranoia about North Korean spies/sleeper agents infiltrating South Korea, and for a good reason. Many tunnels from North Korea leading across the DMZ to the South have been unearthed, and there have been many captured North Korean spies and assassins infiltrating South Korea most notably, the Blue House raid. This has many Korean right-wingers calling the Korean left-wingers 종북 (North Korean sympathizers). Again, much like the rest of the internet, Ilbe users take this to the extreme, even calling former Democrat presidents like Roh Moo-hyun and Kim Dae-Jung "communist sympathizers" and the like. This expands to the Korean Republican government, who call the 1997-2007 period of Democrat control 잃어버린 10년 (The Lost Decade). This explains why some right-wing politicians support the terrorist.

All that being said, both right-winger and left-winger internet crowd love videogames and take them very seriously. We all oppose the Ministry of Women&Family Health's policies that are very anti-gamer and ignorant of the Korean youth's need to relieve stress from (often times) 20-hour studies. Both sides oppose Megalia and feminists in general.

The issue in the OP is over a year old and has very little to do with the "current" Korean GamerGate. That being said, the Ministry of Women&Family Health does have right-wing connections so it's tangentially related at best.

If anyone wants I can make a thread dedicated to this topic. Both of my parents (my father especially) were politically active at this time and my father was the leader of his University's student protest movement during the 1980s.

So if I read your post correctly, it has nothing to do with gaming and everything to do with right vs left. So nothing to do with gamergate at all?

AngryArmourSock Puppet Prison Guard•

AFAIK there actually is a Korean Gamergate currently going on, but it's not related to Ilbe or OU, but to Megalia.

Again AFAIK (because I'm not Korean) Korean "gamer culture" is under attack from a community centered around the website Megalia, which is to the western stereotype of misandrist, "kill all men" feminazis what Ilbe seems to be to the western stereotype of paranoid, misogynistic, "stuck in the cold war" rightwingers.

Basically, as an outsider (so any Koreans please correct if wrong), the current political climate in Korea seems to be the west turned up to 11. Rightwingers celebrate not just pulling firealarms at their opponents' speeches, but actually setting off bombs at them. The feminists aren't saying "Why are you upset about #KillAllMen? It's just a joke", they're saying "No, I'm being serious here. I want all men to die and enjoy snuff films if the victim is male".

22
genghispullo•

"stuck in the cold war" rightwingers

these days right wingers tend to be PRO Russia, and it's the LEFT wingers who are stuck in the cold war

Yeah, even from the post it sounded like a North Korea/South Korea issue, nothing much to do with GG or SJWs.

Though I'd really expect SJWs to be pro-integration, not anti like the OP claims.

I mean I'd be interesed in a thread on the topic. I graduate college this year and I wanted to teach overseas in either Japan or Korea so any sort of insight into the political or social climate is always appreciated.

It doesn't, the KRGG involves a VA for Nexon, korean manga, and a misandrist website called Megalia4. http://archive.is/QTjES

This was posted a month ago.

Someone is attempting to recruit support from Gamergaters by claiming that a situation is "Just Like Gamergate" when it's something completely different.

Might be a parody, hard to tell. If not, shitty attempt at emotional engineering.

It's a very worthy and important discussion how society should treat those who bomb and kill highly objectionable political groups, but not very GG-related.

15
Immahnoob•

You're retarded. The fact that games are getting increasingly censored there, that there are forms of media that are banned and that they have the media supporting terrorism and just being unethical all over, you're completely right, GG has nothing to do with this.

-13
dingoperson2•

No, you're retarded. The question of how society treats and should treat someone who stabs to death a KKK member, a Communist, a Neo Nazi, an Islamist or a convicted pedophile has existed long before Gamergate and will exist long after the word is forgotten.

-4
Immahnoob•

What you said has nothing to do with the subject, retard.

The issue in Korea is incredibly complex, and has nothing to do with SJWs.

It is about nationalism, and very very deep cultural wounds.

This thread is alarmist.

I didn't lied a thing.

Oh ok, because before I heard that it sounded like horse shit.

this image seems to have nothing to do with korean GG. the story in question makes it sound like the people celabrating are nationalists, and while SJW's are a lot of things, nationalists ain't one of them.

13
KFCNyanCat•

SJWs are nationalists, but only when the nation in question doesn't have a mostly-white or mostly-Asian population

1
ggthxnore•

I don't think you can blame SJWs for Ilbe though...

The issue there would be far left South Koreans that are pro-NK commies not being very well liked by a pretty conservative country. If this terrorist attack did happen and the guy did get off that lightly it wasn't about SJW shit.

The Megalian shit, the incredibly Orwellian Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, the censorship of porn and crazy anti-vidya laws... all that is at least partially SJW shit, but Ilbe's lunacy is the other end of the horseshoe.

Korea's got their own particular political baggage and trying to make everything solely a SJW thing is reductionist to the extreme and dishonest.

10

Is this the wrong image? Aside from mentioning SJWs, it doesn't seem related to the Korean Gamergate.

For those that want hard evidence, here is the Korean wiki entry on the terror.

https://namu.wiki/w/%EC%8B%A0%EC%9D%80%EB%AF%B8%20%ED%86%A0%ED%81%AC%20%EC%BD%98%EC%84%9C%ED%8A%B8%20%ED%85%8C%EB%9F%AC%EC%82%AC%EA%B1%B4

If you look at my previous post, you'll notice that it's not related to the current KGG. However if you want translation of the article I'll be happy to do so.

2
MintyTicTac•

This doesn't add up. I thought Ilbe was reviled in SK - a firefighter lost his job for even being associated with the community.

The "SJW" media of SK was supposedly at war with Ilbe, getting behind Megalia (Extremist feminist organisation in support of pedophiles and intentional false rape accusers) because they accused Ilbe members of fabricating evidence against them.

This new piece of information makes no sense in this context.

I hate that I was reminded of this fact 2 months before I take a trip over there to have a final get-together with my family.

Has this situation affected or changed daily life over there in any way? The last time I was in Korea, was when I was a kid, probably more than 10 years ago.
