WARNING: Swarmsim.com appears to be down, and the Kong version of the game no longer is loading for some people. Protect your save file now, and here's what you can do to try and recover it.

This morning the swarmsim.com domain seems to have expired. This means that the game is no longer running on kongregate, attempting to load the game simply leads to an operation timed out error. Some people are still able to run the game on Kong, but that is likely due to them having it cached. If you can still load the game, export your save now.

If you cannot load the kong version, the github page is still up for now. But save files aren't automatically carried over from Kong to Git. If you had used the dropbox beta feature, some people have reported being able to import their cloud save to Git without any issues. If you have used the cloud, try this now. If you haven't been using the cloud, I recommend starting now for safety.

The game saves it's save files on your computer for it to be loaded. This will depend on your browser and will do some detective work, but I and several other Kong chat users were able to find and recover our saves successfully and load them on the Github page. If you have totally lost your Kong save and don't have a dropbox or txt backup, here is what you can do to try and recover your save:

Step one: Find your Swarmsim.sol file. The location of your file will depend on your OS and browser, but I was able to find it by running a search on my computer. I use Google Chrome and Windows 8. For me, the file was saved in "C:\Users[username[\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Pepper Data\Shockwave Flash\WritableRoot#SharedObjects\G5UPPDWU\www.swarmsim.com\storage.swf". The 'G5UPPDWU' seems to be randomly generated gibberish for each user, so just try to navigate to the #sharedobjects folder and looking from there. Other users who have different browsers or OSs, please list where you were able to find your swarmsim.sol folder.

Step two: Open the folder with your document reader of choice. Notepad works fine for me.

Step three: Find your save string. Now this is the part which might take a bit of detective work. Contained in the swarmsim.sol is your save string which you can import with, but the file has extra text around it. Here's the important part: The save string seems to always start with "MS4" and ends with "AA." Here is a pastebin of my own .sol file for example. Look at the very top and you will see "kongregateí;MS4wLjU5|Q2hlYXRl", and there's the MS4. Then there's a big string of text, and ends in "AA", then goes to "__flashBugFix1"

Step Four: Copy everything starting with MS4 and ending with AA into the github page. Makes sure you include the MS4 and AA*, those are the start and end of the file. If done correctly, this should successfully import your save to the github page.

If you managed to do this correctly, make sure to save your save file as a text file on the computer. We don't know if the Kong will be back up, and for how much longer the dropbox exports will work. Protect your save!

Credit to Kongregate chat users Lulero and ArchEnemy1980 for finding out how to extract your saves from these files.

Edit: I have been told an alternate place to look for your .sol file is in C:\Users[username]AppData\Roaming\Macromedia\Flash Player#SharedObjects[random characters]\www.swarmsim.com\storage.swf Again, after #sharedobjects, the next folder is just randomly generated characters, so get to #sharedobjects first.

Edit 2: Your save files may not be visible by default. u/DeafAlien has shared how to unhide hidden folders here

Edit 3: It appears that swarmsim.com is live again and the game has resumed loading on Kongregate for some users. If the game is down for you, clear your browser's cache and attempt to load the game again. if it's still down, use the github page for now, and follow this guide to recover your save if necessary.
