If having lots in common doesn't (necessarily) mean being compatible, what does?
Say you've been seeing someone with whom you have next to nothing in common. Not hobbies, not world views, not life goals.
You don't talk much, because, well, you don't have much to say to each other (and in part because they're very shy and quiet in general). When you do, the conversation is pleasant, but mostly about everyday stuff, your current activity, or plans for the next one, now that the getting-to-know-you portion is mostly over. There is no antagony over your differences. You respect each other's views and opinions, without feeling the need to discuss them.
Kind of like an old married couple, without the bickering, but also without the familiarity
You feel drawn to each other and enjoy each other's company. So much so, that you find yourself enjoying doing things with them which don't interest you in the slightest, all day long.
You're comfortable around each other and the (long) silences aren't awkward. You mostly fill them with being physically affectionate (holding hands, cuddling).
Sex is not (yet) part of the equation, but you're in no rush (not for a lack of attraction/arousal).
You like each other, but can't really explain why. You don't exactly get butterflies while thinking about them most of the time, but you do when you're together. You miss them when you're not.
You care about them and you both want to continue seeing each other exclusively.
Is this compatibility, despite lack of commonalities? Is it just physical chemistry? Something else entirely?
PS: Kinda an update from this: https://www.reddit.com/r/OkCupid/comments/4wl5vj/date_yesterday_im_the_first_guy_shes_ever_kissed/
Are we kidding ourselves?
PPS: Real update: Our second and third dates lasted 10 and 12 hours respectively and halfway through the third we discussed being exclusive and wanting to continue seeing each other indefinitely. We had a great time for both. I don't know what to report, except we like each other. Maybe what we have in common is being boring and not exactly producing exciting stories.
PPPS: I realized I'm worrying and overthinking way too much again. I guess I was mostly worried about these same thoughts going through her head.
I like her. I care about her. I enjoy spending time with her. I want to continue doing so. As far as I know, the feeling is mutual.
Things are going great for a a change and I'm poking holes in it because I don't trust my luck.
