Use threadlocker on the bolts next time!
The jockey bolts shouldn't be cranked down tight, so a fastener adhesive is necessary to prevent what happened to you.
Okay, i'll try that, i just cranked it down really tight this time.. Gonna look after it now
You should replace those jockey wheels while you're at it. Also maybe give your bike a good washing. It will appreciate it.
This bike is from '94 it is actually one of the cleaner ones. It's my commuter so no i'm not going to wash it
The hearts of a thousand commuters just broke in unison.
But forreals, I'm poor so all of my bikes are old. I keep them running well by getting rid of grime buildup and keeping care of them. For just a little bit of work you save a lot of money.
Yeah. I clean the chain and brake surfaces. I don't care about the frame. But i guess i'm wrong. But don't worry it is standing in the rain right now :-)
Having a clean bike aside, washing it is good for checking any frame issues.
I carry a lot of tools on me when going to work. But for some reason i don't have a 3mm allen key.
Though i also dropped the washer from the jockey wheel. So i walked home, dragging my chain on the asphalt.
I carry a Crank Brothers multi-tool and it does everything except 15mm nuts and larger. So I can't do pedals or locking wheel nuts but can adjust all the allen bolts, plus the torx needed for the brakes.
ANd no this isn't an ad for this manufacturer, if there is an alternative multi-tool as good then do get one! I don't carry any other tools though.
Topeak Mini 9 is also decent; more good options reviewed here: http://thesweethome.com/reviews/the-best-multi-tool-for-most-cyclists/ .
yeah i should go buy that. Though i might also need a 9mm wrench. I have never tried a multi tool with a 15mm wrench which was long enough to get enough leverage to take a wheel off. I just keep a real 15mm wrench in my bag.
I took a thin 15mm on tour along with the multi-tool and I reckon I could have handled most stuff. Met some people who didn't have that. I guess it depends on the fittings on your bike!
Three times, colleagues and family have borrowed my 15mm wrench, worth it to carry :-)
I ended up buying the crankbrothers, it works nice. I also bring along a 15mm wrench. The bike was stolen so I no longer need a 9mm wrench for that deraileur (my new one uses allen keys)
I'm going on a 400km charity ride next week and this post has prompted me to tighten the bolts for my pulley wheels before leaving home.
Tighten all the bolts and screws.
Lubricate anything that moves.
Yeah pretty much! Haven't done the headset but I did the wheel hubs last weekend. Don't want to do anything too invasive now as I won't put the miles on to check I haven't done it wrong.
And then when your bike stops shifting, wonder why.
That's a great idea!
It's possible the jockey wheel quit because of the filthy working conditions.
very possible
I'm curious, because in normal use the jockey wheel bolts should not come loose. They are oriented in such a way that the normal direction of travel is the same direction that would tighten the bolt if there was significant friction at the bearing location.
I guess with enough crazy riding any bolt can come lose.
Your chain looks like it's going between the spokes, what is that black magic?!
Also that is unfortunate, and those wheels are more expensive than they have a right to be.
yeah it looks like that, but it doesn't.
I guess normal grease isn't enough?
I think I'm crazy
There's a green man's eye next to the part where the chain goes under the spoke.
ಠ_ಠ I can't unsee.
maybe that is why i had problems ;-)
It's flexing and loops back out of the wheel out of frame.
There’s nothing weird or abnormal in that picture, just a normal run-of-the-mill every-day sort of picture.
