Why does JCOM want to come to my new apartment to set up TV when my TV already works?

Sorry if this is a rudimentary question, but I want to make sure they're not trying to be sneaky and start billing me for a subscription or something. My Japanese is so-so, and all I could gather from the rep on the phone is that they want to set up my TV and it's (?) free. Also something about TV maintenance.

I come from the land of Comcast, so I naturally fear cable companies.

To sell you shit. Or at least try.

Been with them for years. Just moved phone and internet over for simplicity. They seem like a decent bunch.

I don't use their services or have a tv, but annually they want to come in, peer at the cable spot in the wall for 5 seconds, then give me their brochure.

I've heard they do this as a way of data collection. They get to see what kind of things a person in your age demographic has in their home, such as TV make, appliance types etc. Then they sell that data to interested 3rd parties. Since they are one of the few companies that people allow into their homes, it's an effective way for big companies to know what people have.

They are not allowed to enter to your apartment just to see your cable spot.

they are if you allow them

Even though we don't have a cable subscription, J:com provides the signal for the over-the-air broadcasts where we are. One time they wanted to come in and made sure everything was working correctly, which is probably what's happening with in your case. Of course he offered to leave J:com literature with us when he finished, but we just trashed it all after he left.

I used J:COM for a year and they only came to my home to install the TV tuner when I signed up.

If your tuner is working fine, sounds to me they want to sell you something.

Ding, ding, ding.

We don't even have a TV here. The cable outlets are unused. JCOM guy came on the proviso that he was just testing the outlet and not sales.

Guy comes, tries some sales pitch. I tell him to just test the outlet. No sales. (In Japanese)

He persists.

I tell him to fuck off, finish the test, and get out.

The only ones worse are au/kddi.

They just want to make sure your cable box is set up correctly. Let 'em do it.

I had this happen recently too. I was in a temporary monthly place for 2 months with JCOM then moved into where I wanted to be for the next few years, I transferred everything over and hooked it up myself and had no issues, but they still wanted to come by. They actually came twice, once with new paper work for the new address and again with a tech that brought a whole brand new cable modem, even though the one I was using before was only for 2 months. I didn't incur any extra charges or anything at least.

If you don't have any contract with JCOM and and don't want anything from them, especially if you have no TV or it works via internet connection from other company, do not let them enter. They are for sales only. Updated: missed "don't "
