This doesn't make any sense at all, first I still need to build smart previews,a step more and more waiting, and it's no different than before, when you used to built smart previews, and disconnect the HD to not use the originals,so basically this update is just so you don't need to unplug the HD? Very useful (sarcasm). Other thing that I still think is unacceptable is,why the dang you can't export a "smart preview" to edit in Photoshop?if in fact the original is loaded too, like capture one does. Just saying..bla bla bla.
Looking forward to seeing how this goes. Hopefully it makes for a decent speed increase.
Incredible. Thank you for sharing!
Dang! I literally bought an iPad Pro to do faster culling/editing an hour before hearing this... this should speed things up enough on my Macbook to not need it.
Does the iPad Pro help?
I just bought it yesterday so hard to say yet. It's... interesting so far. I like it but not sure how efficient it is. One other reason I bought it was for editing photos during wedding for social media now that RAW is supported. Definitely testing it for the length of the return window...
Please keep me updated with your thoughts! I've been thinking about salary sacrificing this with work.
Get Photo Mechanic if you really want to cull fast. LR does not begin to compare.
Have you tried LR with smart previews? I'm sure PM is great, but I don't think you can actually be faster than instant
PM doesn't even waste time building previews, it just goes.
I work with both. PM just gets up and goes. And even with Smart Previews, PM is still faster between images when culling regardless of the pre-render time.
I have it, for whatever reason it isn't a ton faster on my Macbook.
On a hdd PM can still have some lag between pictures if your going really fast. On ssd pm is instant. Might be the issue?
is this update only for creative cloud subscribers?
Oh thank god, that was so annoying!
Edit: I'm dumb and didn't read the article first.
OH. MY. GOD.
Please make it good. I'm so tired of relaunching LR and disconnecting my NAS and all. I've been wanting such feature for months.
EDIT : The priority of previews is not entirely addressed. I mean ok now we should be able to use Smart Previews by default. But what about 1:1 previews ? IIRC I can't see my 1:1 preview if I don't have access to the file nor smart preview.
EDIT 2 : I've just updated. It's faster.
You don't have to disconnect your drive. Just rename the folder. Personally I just put an X at the end of the folder housing the raw files. Immediately LR goes to smart previews only.
The point is you shouldn't have to do any of it and now you don't.
