Why 「自分と性格」 instead of 「自分の性格」

From my textbook:

友達になるなら、自分と性格が似ている人と違う人とどちらがいいですか。

Relative clauses can be tricky, so let's break it down:

自分と性格が似ている人

人 = a person 似ている人 = a person who is similar 性格が似ている人 = a person whose personality is similar 自分と性格が似ている人 = a person whose personality is similar to yourself

Some vocab if it's unclear: 自分 oneself 性格 personality 似る to resemble, be similar 人 person

The と after 自分 connects to 似ている. 自分と性格が似ている人 is "A person whose personality is similar to your own."

So as a general rule, possesive の transforms to と in the context of 似ている?

no.

Xに似る is used when X is ranked above the subject

Xと似る is used when there is no definite difference.

自分の性格が似ている人 would sound like someone whose personality matches their own personality. It just doesn't make sense in this context.

自分と似る They're similar to you. 性格が is just specifying that they're similar to you in personality.

I think you're trying to make a connection between 自分 and 性格 that isn't there. 自分 here is already implying 自分の性格. The explicit 性格 in the sentence is the one belonging to 人.

Yes. I didn't realize that 性格が was being "inserted" between 自分と and 似ている.

I thought 自分と was being appended before 性格が似ている.
