Question on upgrade progression.

Help

OK so i just went through the portal for the first time, and it occurs to me there was no rhyme or reason to how i handled upgrading gear, to what lvl and then when i would switch to the next better weapon/armor. i want to maximize my metal usage but don't want to have to calculate the metal vs benefit of each level for each item.

anybody have a rule of thumb i can use?

There are slight variations per piece of equipment - and you can find more precise information by looking at various guides - but as a general rule of thumb, a buying a prestige (in the upgrade tab) is worth about 9-10 levels in the equipment tab. The point in which it stops being efficient to buy levels is before that, around level 5.

As you advance in the game, you'll find that you buy equipment levels less and less, relying entirely on prestiges, at least until the very end of your run when prestiges become more expensive. But for the first few portals, upgrading to level 5 or so and then prestiging when you can afford it is a good way to go.

To add to this. Mid-late game you're better off just getting the prestiges when you can afford them, rather than bothering with cost-benefit analysis, because having the bonus sooner is better

Early on, regarding which ones to level higher, check out the table on this page. Notable is that 3 levels in dagger is still cost efficient on greatswords

Buy levels when they're cheap, e.g. the first few tiers. Then when you reach tier V or so, just buy prestiges, don't bother with levels, because they're expensive.

There are scenarios where leveling is useful, but it's not during standard progression.
