Good おせち dinner sellers?

I've not ordered osechi meals before, but I'm curious to partake this year and it seems like a lot of places are starting to take reservations already.

Can anyone recommend a seller that makes good ones that won't break the bank? Also, my wife is a bit skittish about head-still-attached fish, so bonus points if the fish aren't too fishy looking.

Not to get too pedantic about it, but osechi is the first meal of the new year, a.k.a. breakfast.

Don't know what you mean by that, because my version of break the bank and yours are probably different.

We usually get ours from Diamaru Department Store and chose one of the courses that are around ¥30,000. We'll still supplement it with ozoni (miso soup with mochi) and some more prawns that we make ourselves. It's enough for the four of us to eat at least twice.

If you want to get more bang for your buck, I think that you can osechi that is more volume over quality at a supermarket like AEON.

If you really want to save some cash then going with a bento shop like Hokka Hokka Tei.

I think any of those places will be decent, but like everything in life the more you pay, the better you get.

That's a tough request, because the way the fish are presented is a big part of the tradition. Of course, you don't have to eat everything. The more expensive you go, the more likely they are to have things like crab, caviar and steak. The cheaper ones tend to be more fish and prawns.

The good news is that when ordering, they always have photos and ingredient lists, so you know what you are getting.

Thanks for the help! Didn't realize it was breakfast food!

I don't recall any fishy looking fish in ours. I think we arrange through one of the department stores. Either Tokyu or Odakyu, they have a table where you could reserve. I think ours last year was three boxes, one Japanese, one Chinese, and one more foreign style taste. Pretty sure we got it through Odakyu.

Why is osechi so expensive? Just looks like a glorified bento.

I wouldn't take it personally. JCJ was just leaking a bit, you didn't have to delete your post.

I agree with another user that you got shat on a little too harshly there (didn't deserve it).
Although that top post did make me spit coffee all over my monitor. (I'd go get a Starbucks to replace it, but I don't want to get fired for crossing the street.)

Already there's more threads with romaji "tax to our shi" and one with kanji "課税調整" in it. Don't worry about it.

¯_(ツ)_/¯ if they can't manage hiragana, they aren't gonna help this conversation much anyways.

there was a problem with osechi that people got through groupon several years ago, with a company called birdcafe. they basically delivered osechi that looked completely different than what was promised on their ad. I would recommend avoiding this route.
