It makes a lot of sense. It was a Bernie state that Clinton assumed was hers based on history. There was a blind spot because polls didnt focus there. Nate Silver was saying a week before the election they didnt have many good polls on the region. Trump actively campaigned in there. Clinton didnt even visit the state in the general.

Instead, Hillary spent her energy in states she didnt even need like FL and NC, instead of shoring up and securing her critical firewall of blue states that was already putting her over 270.

Id be really curious in a few years if anyone writes some books on what the strategists were thinking, because Id like to know why they went for 50/50 battles instead of locking in the 80/20 battles, leaving them wide open to get flanked.

Easy to say in hindsight, but I always did feel that Clinton's campaign was very lacklustre. At the time, I put it down to to Trump monopolising the headlines, and thought Clinton must have been quietly going about her business in the background.

But it seems that maybe the campaign really was that poor.....

Which is honestly pretty crazy how poor it was considering how much money she spent compared to Trump

I was certainly surprised. I didnt predict any of that; I just enjoy digging into the workings after to see how the engine runs.

With all the hindsight data coming in, from a military perspective I can see a lot of tactical errors. A lot of basic principles in resource allocation were not followed. Or if you like video games: it seems to me like she made a risky tower dive instead of just farming the creep, and got caught by the jungler.

you should take a read at Scott Adams' blog, Hillary's camp did an incredible job, and pretty much any other candidate would have lost to the campaign, but Kellyanne conway, the first female campaign manager, is simply too good to beat.

Clinton didnt even visit the state in the general.

This kind of thing really makes me wonder what if a democrat actually tried to campaign in the 'solid red' states in the middle of the country. How much of the country is ignored in the presidential race because they candidates don't feel they need to go there to secure votes?

I wish I could see a list of states each candidate didn't campaign in.

Doesnt answer you perfectly, but here is a map of where they each opened offices.

What is interesting is that came out early Oct, and now with hindsight we know she had Texas closer than she had Iowa, and she had Georgia closer than Ohio.

She also was close in Arizona, but apparently did nothing there?

And yet, subs in reddit were praising the Clinton groundwork and saying Trump was foolish and had no chance.

HILLARY =/= OBAMA

Breaks my heart, 2008 Wisconsin was so much different, Walker wasn't governor, Feingold was still in the Senate.

Why do people like you treat election results as a definitive description of the entire population of a place? The election results aren't who Wisconsin is (sadly). The Wisconsin turnout was low this year...a 20-year low. If 10,000 more millennials and blacks chose to go vote, this whole story would be dramatically different. But they didn't They all assumed Trump would lose so they stood home Tweeting about it instead of voting.

As a liberal living in red Wisconsin, I didn't vote because I can't vote for a candidate I disagree with as much as I disagree with Hillary. Voting third party isn't worth the effort even if I agreed with Johnson or Stein enough to vote for them. On principle I won't go vote just to vote against Trump.

Though maybe I should have.

Yep. Moved here in 2006. Leaving the state (and country) now.

I hate to bring this up, but when all these overwhelmingly white counties voted for Obama, nobody complained about racism.

Now, when overwhelmingly white counties voted for Trump, I see people claiming "OMG white ppl what are you doing so racist".

4
heartbeatsOP•

Well, Obama didn't base a large part of his campaign on knee jerk dog-whistle bigotry and a return to some abstract idea of a past that never really existed.

St Croix County seems to be the only that flipped from red to blue. Curious to hear if anyone knows the story there since it's an outlier. Guessing it's proximity to the Twin Cities played a role?

2
heartbeatsOP•

That was actually an error on my part. Trump won that county by nearly 20 percentage points.

The visualization is not bad. I'd recommend putting in a key (to indicate what the colors signify), and indicating where the city centers are.
