[MAIN SPOILERS] Littlefinger's dialogue about...

Main

The climb. Gave me chills the first time I heard it. Quite possibly the best speech in the whole series in my opinion.

It's so true and this viewpoint could even be used in today's world. The climb is all there is.

Littlefinger is a scary motherfucker.

"Ugly don't you think?"

"Yet it has a certain appeal."

"The Lysa Arryn of chairs."

Few of my friends thought it was corny, but it has always been one of my favorite scenes in the series.

GeneralTryOP•

I don't think it was corny at all, didn't even cross my mind. It came off of anti-corny, pure badassery.

If I recall I was on the fence about delving into Ice and Fire until I saw this scene by chance. It is amazing.

Poor Ros. What a shitty way to go.

yep that was one of the secondary characters that I hated to see go. It wasn't that she wasn't smart enough, she just wasn't smart enough in the right way at the right time.

She was just smart enough to get herself tangled in the web, without being smart enough to play the web :/

If any of you guys would like to see what Peter Baelish would be like in modern times, check out the film Calvary.

Great film and aidan gillen plays a character with a similar outlook on life.

I want to hear Aiden Gillen say that same speech in the Baltimorish lilt from Carcetti on the Wire.

4
Leon_Art•

I want him to say nursery rhymes like that ;)

The reality of the speech is the 99.999% of the people is afraid to climb the ladder. They were born and raised to fear the ladder, to avoid the ladder, to refuse to climb the ladder. But the ladder is the risk you take to have more, be more, much more.

It is not just how smart, evil, intelligent, beautiful you are. It is about overcoming your fears.

Exactly. Game of thrones, as much as people think it's fiction, is based upon (perhaps not on purpose) a lot of events that have happened in real life. This stuff still happens, though the game of rising the ladder is a bit different, but still need to be bold and smart for it.

GoT is based on history

Look to the Roman Empire and it's many emperors for the countless stories (some even crazier than GoT, the countless Joffreys that ruled Rome for example) of the laddah.

Here is one of the more interesting (though there are so many) Emperors that resembled Joffrey on steroids, think of GoT when reading:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caracalla

And of course then you have Constantius the Second, who knew the "Game of Thrones" all too well:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constantius_II

"Soon after his father's death Constantius supposedly ordered a massacre of his relatives descended from the second marriage of his paternal grandfather Constantius Chlorus, though the details are unclear.[10][11] Eutropius, writing between 350 and 370, states that Constantius merely sanctioned “the act, rather than commanding it”.[12] The massacre killed two of Constantius' uncles and six of his cousins,[13] including Hannibalianus and Dalmatius, rulers of Pontus and Moesia respectively. The massacre left Constantius, his older brother Constantine II, his younger brother Constans, and three cousins Gallus, Julian and Nepotianus as the only surviving male relatives of Constantine the Great."

That's a great scene!

Just watched this today. It was really well shot.

climbing the ladder is the essence of social mobility

no one climbed their way up without taking some serious risks

Probably one of the best monologue by any character in any form of live adaptation. IMO. George R.R Martin is a freaking genius,

imspooky•

I always picture Kevin Spacey making this speech as Frank Underwood. "Kay-oss is a LAD-dah..."

1
BlushingWallFlowerLady Stoneheart•

I think the speech itself is good but a little overrated--he doesn't say anything earth-shattering or particularly poetic-- but I think it is one of the only times Littlefinger ever really makes a speech that relates to his personal ambitions and philosophies, and you can see that he is exposing a little bit of his inner self there, so it sticks out in my mind too.

And he did a GREAT job delivering it, as much as we like to tease about Kayosh being Aladah.

And yes he is scary, and I hope the show sticks with that tone in the next season, where I hope he'll be scrambling and scheming with devious genius.

Also if I ever have twins, I am naming them Kayosh and Aladah.

I should really show this to the poor idiot who still cares for you.
