Talent
Posting for the second time. I think this is technically an essay. Again, I don't know much about different types of poetry and whatnot. Anyway, I wrote it last night after listening to some stuff by Watsky.
Apparently we all are born with a talent.
With some people, it’s pretty obvious. I mean, look at the folks who can draw better than Da Vinci at age 14. Or the musicians who complete their first album in high school, and it’s not a waste of a blank cd and paper lunch bag.
But they might be good because they work hard. I don’t know. Mostly cause I’m not one of those people.
I’ve been told I have natural talent. That I can do things well that most others can’t. I guess it’s a matter of opinion. Or a matter of wrong opinion. In my opinion.
When I was a freshman in high school, back in...wow. 2008. That’s almost ten years ago. That’s depressing.
Anyway, when I was a freshman, I painted a watercolor gryphon. Or griffin. Or gryffin. Spelling is weird. I painted the..bird lion. And it actually turned out pretty good. Of course there are mistakes and things I can’t stand about it. All things considered, it’s a very mediocre piece. Don’t go asking me where I found the skill to do it. Dumb luck I guess.
Where did it came from? I have no idea. See, my family isn’t particularly artsy. Same deal with most of my friends. Well, that’s not true. I know lots of artsy people. But they are sound artsy. While I’m more about the graphite on tree action. Now they seem to have some of this “Natural Talent” thing. One of my best friends can pick up an instrument and be able to play a decent song fifteen minutes later. It makes me want to punch a pillow. I say pillow because I’m not a big fan of pain. And I’m not too keen on punching my friends.
Back to the grypho...griff….bird lion. I slacked off in class. I was so far behind, and my teacher kept urging me to go faster. To catch up with the rest of the kids. So I rebelled in my goodie-two-shoes, christian kid, terrified of adults way. I just went slower and played stupid. Not something I’d recommend.
I can still remember putting all the art supplies into my backpack when I realized I’d have to take it home if I wanted to pass. I straddled the line between excitement and disdain for my now required homework. That night I went home and played video games.
Then on saturday I looked at the page for a whole five minutes, and left to play video games.
Then on sunday, the day before it was due, I looked at it. I looked at it hard. And then left to play video games.
But you want to know what happened next?
My mom called me up for dinner and asked about it. I lied and said I had it almost done. After dinner, I reluctently snuck all of my supplies upstairs with my abnormally large belief that I was some kind of assassin/thief. And I got to work.
My only company was my portable cd player, the only cd I owned, and the cd I stole from my brother. Skillet and Red. I played them in that player. Over and over and over and over and over. And I painted.
It was fun. I couldn’t believe that I actually was enjoying some homework. You know? I tried to hate it, I really did. But I loved that darn lion bird. I finished somewhere around 2 am. I was such a rebel. Staying up past my newly acquired 10:00 bedtime.
The next day I turned it in, and when I got it back, I think I got a C. But that was great! While those other losers got their A’s and their B’s, I had a C and a neat painting of a lion bird!
Now, where did it come from? The talent or skill I mean. I don’t know. Maybe it was just beginner’s luck. A mass of tiny coincidences that worked together to make a painting that still pleases my optic sensors to this day? Who knows?
Where did it go? The talent or skill I mean. I don’t know. Maybe it just vanished and I have to relearn how to do it properly. Or maybe the talent was repressed by aliens and I have to find it within myself and one day save the world by painting a new lion bird! Who knows, right?
Where the fuck did it come from, cottoneye joe?
