Well, to be totally honest it's about the Trump election and transition. Not sure if you follow US politics, but there's a big debate going on (especially on the left) about whether we should "normalize" Trump and just move on as though he were just another Republican prez, like GW Bush or Reagan or something, vs. the other side of the debate that argues we should resist normalizing him because he's not normal, he's an unqualified, race-baiting, tweet-mongering so-and-so. That's what the poem is explicitly about. But if it succeeds, it should hopefully transcend that specific context and have a meaning that's more universal. I'm too biased to make a determination on that, but your comment makes me hopeful. Thanks for responding!

<edit>[Here's an example of the debate](http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/page/ct-abnormalize-trump-media-twitter-page-perspec-1123-md-20161122-story.html) to which I'm referring.

What I understand is your centralization of the idea that in the end, things even out and "normalize" to become a unified entity. Is it purposed to make a statement about society, about life itself, or something else? It's a great poem to want to empathize with, keep writing!

This is excellent! I especially like how you broke the phrase "after they cut you/down to size" lines - communicates the social violence that the speaker feels.
Also, as a mental health practitioner, I totally understand the dangers (and sometimes benefits) of normalizing, and it sure is frightening! This speaks well to Americas social climate presently (in this neighbouring Canadian's opinion)

Thanks! I was trying to vary the rhythm a little bit with that line (and a couple others), because I hate it when poems get too "sing-songy." But it's good feedback to know that line didn't work for you.

I really like the repetition of "normalize." It's very fitting to the definition of normalize for it to be repeated. I like the rhyme scheme, it really flows well in my head. The only line that sounds a bit weird to me is "Flies in the face of every scheme he tries." It just sounds a little bit like a mouthful.

Thank you! I feel like I've been fighting against society's attempts to "normalize" me for my entire life. For the most part, I think society succeeded and I failed, because at the end of the day you have to eat. A tiny few are lucky or talented enough to have it both ways, but as a 40-something I now know I'm not one of them. Writing little poems like this are my only way of resisting the darkness, however anonymously and however momentarily.

I realize that this is about the whole "normalize" issue going on right now with Trump, however it's a great message in other aspects, too. Maybe not the parts like "every scheme he tries", but it seems to me that society as a whole tries to "normalize" everyone, original, outrageous thought is stifled, and eccentric opinions are shunned. You've done a good job of conveying that, whether wittingly or not. The flow is nice, too, I have a soft spot for poets who still rhyme, and you've succeeded there, too. Great poem!

Another ragged entry in the new school of post-election *Sturm und Drang*.

Normalize, normalize
Pull out my eyes
With mock surprise.

After they've cut you
Down to size
You must not forget
To normalize.

Just as the Dream
Like the Dreamer, dies:
Normalize, normalize.

All our collective wisdom
Flies in the face of every scheme he tries
But dry your eyes
And normalize.

If there is no truth
Then there are no lies:
That is what's meant
By normalize.
