You need big army regardless of which victory condition you're going for. Maybe you're playing on the very low difficulty settings of civ5 because even on prince, other civs will attack you if you don't have a decent army and are competing for wonders.
You definitely didn't need a big army to win on prince in civ5. I usually played on Emperor and rarely needed a big army. 1 or 2 units per city was more than enough to fend off the AI most of the time.
This. And they didn't declare war all the time. I mean on this map, it's the TSL Earth map in giant, i don't really fear any of them, because they are miles away. But these war declarations every 10 turns are just annoying. Because ALL of them give me a peace deal after 10 turns for nothing.
Maybe it's a bug on this map or something idk. Wasn't that heavy on generated maps.
That's the one mechanic I hate - AI just looks at your military power, based on overall strength. I could have 1000000 galleys and get a military score of X and the AI would never attack because they think I am too strong. Same thing if you replace galley with slingers.
This. And I also hate that EVERY civ goes after you if you have a weak army, even chill civs.
Like russia here, 2 turns earlier he was complementing me on my culture and science (because it's russias agenda, right?) and suddenly "Fuck your culture, your army is shit, so you're shit"

I don't know it never felt like that in civ5. But maybe I'm wrong.
