Since every single team involved has either changed roster or roles since they were last in a tournament, here's a nice preview article:

Welp, on one hand I want to root for Rogue's and Mistfit's new national roosters, but on the other, I kinda fear like it's gonna be another "Koreans always win" eSport, which makes it kinda less exciting.

Also, something I don't get, why do Rogue and AF Blue start only from the second tier? Does it mean they basically have at least a guaranteed place 3rd-4th?

but hopefully' EnvyUs already wrecked korean teams in APex :)

Not even close. There's like one Korean team that actually deserves top 10, the rest are in because of the incessant "KR are gods" circlejerk.

I believe they are starting in that tier because they advanced the furthest in APEX last month, which was the major Korean tournament. Afreeca advanced to the finals where they lost to EnVyUs. Rogue also lost to EnVyUs in the first knockout round, which is the same round Lunatic Hai were eliminated. For them to give the first round bye to Rogue in this tournament, I'm assuming they are factoring in that Rogue was the number 1 overall seed in APEX going into the knockout round, or possibly because they lost to EnVyUs 3-2 in that round while Lunatic Hai were swept 3-0 by Kongdoo Uncia.

I don't know if I'd say that Korean teams are the best right now. I think the fact that a U.S.-based team in EnVyUs won the APEX tournament is a pretty clear indicator that Korea is not the best right now - U.S. teams usually perform sub-par in Korea just because it is a different environment. It might take Misfits and Rogue a little time to work out their current rosters, but I still feel like the west has the OW advantage. At the very least, the best Korean teams like Kongdoo, Lunatic High, and LWred are no better than EnVyUs, Misfits, and Rogue right now.

Root for whoever you want to right now. The game is definitely NOT in a "Koreans always win" state right now. Don't let the World Cup show matches deceive you. They managed to vote in a roster that would likely be one of the best KR teams, unlike other countries.

Koreans have ruled LoL for about 4 years, yet it's still an incredibly popular eSport, especially in NA, EU, Brazil, Russia, China, SEA, Australia. It seems Starcraft is the only game that went the way of Koreans.

What did we learn from the first match?

  1. Manneten is a good Roadhog
  2. Misfits didn't practice any comps where he plays DPS
  3. Tank meta sucks balls to watch; nerf nade ASAP

I highly suggest you guys to use over.gg for finding information about these matches and matches in the future. I found this site recently and it's really makes following the scene much easier. (it's pretty much HLTV for overwatch if you are familiar with that)

Survival guide just an hour before the main event.

And 4 comments so far.

This sub does not give any damn shit about Overwatch eSports.

I guess that's what r/competitiveOverwatch is for...

I mean, I thought survival guides are posted about one day before the main event. If timezones concern you guys, then why don't the mods here post survival guides earlier for EU or NA viewers?

Survival guides being posted just one hour before the start of the event is rather too late, I think.

Well maybe I'm just being too picky.

SpriteGuy_000MODBuild 'em up; Break 'em down.•

Yes, the Survival Guides are normally up a little earlier than this one was, but this Invitational fell at an odd time, which led to the Guide getting up at an odd time. EDIT: It also didn't help the first match started 30 minutes before it was supposed to.

However, we've had this tournament and many other tournaments up on the sidebar for weeks, as well as an information consolidation thread up for this week's tournaments (which included IEM and MLG) since Monday.

In addition, both the IEM and the MLG Invitationals will have Survival Guides and are both 3 day tournaments, which means the Guides will get plenty of uptime.

Just because the Surivial Guide is up a little late doesn't mean we "don't give a damn shit" about Esports.
