It's unlikely something would happen, but better be safe than sorry!
I hope this isn't the new norm.
My brother went to Israel, and told me how all the roads have huge barriers on the side to prevent the same sort of thing.
It was already the norm, at least here in France.
The difference is that it was a very routine measure so not much attention was given to it being perfectly truck proof. For Nice, the guy exploited a flaw in the blockade by using the wide sidewalk but it is unlikely that such a mistake will be made a second time here in France.
The problem is that next attack will probably use another tactic. Terrorists will always have the initiative and there is no such thing as a perfect defense.
That was the true sense behind the french PM comment "you will have to get used to it" : intel agencies stop 90 to 95 % of the attacks but some will get through and we have to accept that there is no such thing as 0 % risk and keep on living. It was not a message to say that nothing can be done but an assessment that the state is not all powerful.

No, that isn't going to stop 100% of terrorist attacks either. Additionally, somebody is not a terrorist until they have committed an act of terrorism, in the same way somebody is not a thief until they have stolen something.
Hard to go back in time on that one. Also, preventing people from coming in doesn't stop their message, which is what corrupts many of the eventual perpetrators.
Their message is only reaching one type of demographics. It's not like ISIS is radicalizing the Chinese or Ukrainian or Australian immigrants in France.
The only issue is that to do that you have to go back 1000 years and live in a closed society.
[removed]
1000 years really? You see no other solution than that?
[removed]
Or more like 50 or 60 years.
The is simply not true.
Same could be said for German autobahns where they are going the extra way to make sure that people don't drive on it the wrong way.
Honestly he sounds like someone who has never seen a road lol
[removed]
Where was he? Didn't see anything like that in Tel Aviv or Jerusalem. Or maybe it wasn't intrusive enough for me to notice.
The only weird thing is metal detectors at the mall (you can skip them if you're white)
Tel Aviv
It should be the new norm. Not defending against terror attacks is suicide of your own people.
Unfortunately there is a group of people in Europe that wants to murder senselessly. We have to defend ourselves against that. And we will. Thankfully.
[removed]
That might be one way to help minimize the problem. But it is not it's final solution. Although it might help to stem some crime related problems.
I honestly have no clear cut answer for this terrorist problem. If I had it I'd told you. :|
They have used trucks in the Netherlands on several occasions.
The Christmas Peace is an old trafition, if anyone was curious. Here's a pretty good write-up https://www.turku.fi/en/christmas-city/declaration-christmas-peace
There should be another truck in case someone steals this truck.
A truck truck
But what if someone steals that truck?
The German police should be able to handle it.
The paradox of trucks
Then you get a Truck Truck Truck.
I am glad that precautions are being taken, but I am sad that they are becoming necessary enough to be prudent.
It's the price we pay when societies transit from homogenics to heterogenics in cultural reference.
A completely unnecessary and pointless transition that destroys native culture and harms us more in the long term. It's the definition of self made problem, it's like cutting off your arm for no reason and then complaining about the pain and bleeding.
True.
I'm kind of sad we as society are getting so scared of these assholes that this sort of thing is deemed necessary. Terrorist attacks cause like 1000 times less death than regular traffic accidents in Europe, even in 2016, yet people fear them much more. This makes me sad. By fearing these assholes we give them power.
I'm sure those people in Berlin weren't scared. It still happened. Better safe than dead.
A coward dies many deaths. I don't get why so many people are willing to give up their principles and way of life for a very very marginal increase in safety.
It's just parking a truck across a closed road lol
Besides, these deaths by terrorism don't replace deaths by traffic accidents. They add to them. Why bother having an emergency brake on a train if the likelihood of a problem is so small? Because it's an avoidable problem that can keep people a little safer.

By fearing these assholes we give them power.
By allowing these assholes into Europe, we give them power.
Letting them bully is into being heartless bastards towards people in deep shit who come to our borders asking refuge is how we give them power.
.. no its the opposite, if they cant get people into the eu masked as refugees easily it makes it harder for them. It makes them less powerful if they cant mass import more lunatics
Stop being naive.
Because we have huge licensing , trainfinf, enforcement and infrastructure making traffic safe
Safe? Holy traffic cone, Batman, did you ever see death by traffic statistics?

Wrong. Turning one's back on the desperate would. But thanks to leaders like Merkel, the forces of evil can only hope to turn the occasional feeble minded instead of having a real organisation like ETA, RAF or IRA.
You will learn.
Nobody is inviting them in our countries. We are offering people who have been ass raped by war in their homelands a roof. Part of what these dicks are trying to accomplish by blowing shit up is that we turn into heartless Nazis they say we are. Turning away people who have nowhere else to go on a fear that one in 100 000 is a bad guy is just cowardly.
I think most of the migrants entering Europe have been been in a war zone and very few if any entered Europe from a war zone.
In the city where I live, we also have roads to Christmas markets blocked by police and firefighters trucks.
Would be great if you can elaborate, thanks!
So no one could drive to the crowd, probably...
I got that part but what is a Christmas peace?
It's tradition based on old legislation. Wikipedia has pretty good article of it.
700+ year old tradition.
Thanks, now I know.
[deleted]
ok, thanks!
Christmas peace declaration is an old tradition in Turku, Finland. Since at least 1300s. It is broadcast on Finnish tv and radio. There are plenty of people there.
To prevent terrorists from driving a truck through the packed crowd they blocked off the street leading to the place with army trucks.
thanks for the explanation ;)
Si vis pacem, para bellum.
Why not tanks? Tanks are cooler than trucks.
And super loud, destroy the roads and are expensive.
Takes a German to know tanks, eh? :D
What about wheeled APCs and IFVs?
Might stir panic. Military trucks are common sight on the roads. Seeing other military equipment would make it seem there is actual threat.
My educated guess would be that these units were loaned from the Naval base situated just a few kilometers away. They have trucks but not APCs.
Might be a bit over the top compared to a simple solution of just parking a truck there.
Yes, but IFVs are cooler than trucks.
Tanks drive on Finnish city roads in parades twice a year. A bit overkill for this type of operation, though.
I once saw a tank driving on a regular road near a British army base, which made me wonder if the road was made of a special material.
Well roads in and around army bases are usually made of concrete if they have to support tanks. Standard asphalt roads suffer greatly when tanks drive on them regularly.
I went to a weps museum some time ago. Tanks there had rubber on their tracks.. i wonder if that's normal (and if those still destroys roads ?)
Tanks would ruin the atmosphere of christmas peace...
well, you can always ornate it, so it would look pretty and festive!
...it would look pretty and festive
Now that you mentioned, we sometimes actually do exactly that, with Christmas trees and everything.
like this.
Any Fin with a backstory here?
It's due the Berlin attacks
It takes a truck to stop a truck sort of thing
You've got to fight trucks with trucks.
The only thing that can stop a bad man with a truck is a good man with a truck.
The only thing stopping a bad guy with a truck is a good guy with a truck.
*Finn
They took the phrase; "Fight fire with fire" quite literally.
Well if there was somebody who wanted to get through that with a truck I don't think he would get through it
Well what if they stole that truck ?
When there's a conscript inside it and still a big number of police officers around? Yeah, very likely.
I'm not being very serious with that comment
Fight truck with truck.
Only one to stop a bad guy with a truck is a good guy with a truck!
They should lock the trucks. Just in case.
We're talking about defense forces here and I'm pretty certain they have learned to lock their trucks
It was a joke, should have put a /s here, sorry.
Probably not. A lot of military vehicles don't have keyed ignitions or locking doors - just pushbuttons.
I thought they wanted to steal Christmas or something.
When it said "Declaration of Christmas Peace" I thought of something like this.
In Belgium we have concrete barriers.
Probably much smaller area to cover in Turku and having trucks for barriers, is easier than placing and later removing concrete barriers.
Makes sense.

Better this than getting towed by a truck.
Very prudent. Someone is learning.

Well that's literally what they're doing... Check the wikipedia link u/dharms posted
Still a shitty title.
How is it shitty title when it's exactly describing the content?
Finnish defense forces blocked the way to declaration of Christmas peace with trucks
Why would they stop declaration of peace with trucks? What did the trucks do?
When I first read the title I thought it was some sort of protest by the Finnish defense force.
Then I saw the peaceful "protest picture" and thought how well behaved and low key the Finnish protesters are.
It's peaceful now that it's Christmas but when it was independence day there was like 5 different protest at the same time at Helsinki and it's pretty chaotic
Did you find it chaotic? I thought the conclusion was that even though there were a few separate protests (with different and even opposing ideologies, and not really angry mobs as much as just protests), it went pretty well.
Usually anarchists opposing the linnan juhlat are causing some trouble, but I think the neo nazi thing and their opponents were kept separate and it didn't lead to anything chaotic. I guess it was a bit tense between the two groups, but overall it went surprisingly peacefully.
Hats off to the police for their work this year. They had built a wall of vans and riot police between the anarchists and neonazis.
