If you're financed with Capital One, you're probably going to be waiting a while

So, my battery died last night. I've been patient, but I decided to dig in this morning because I really don't want to pony up for a fresh battery.

The good news is that I was able to get through on chat twice in a relatively short amount of time. I landed on Step 15 on Nov 6. VW says they sent my payoff request on Dec 14. That's a pretty bad lagtime in itself, but, OK, the request has been made, right?

I'm financed with Capital One, so I called them. My account shows no payoff request activity.

Back to VW. VW says there's a special contact at the banks.

Back to Capital One. After a lot of hold time, the buck stopped with the third person I talked to. There is a special team working with VW. There is no way to contact that team. There is no information available from inside that team regarding whether VW has submitted a request for a payoff amount or when a payoff number might be generated and returned to VW. Somewhere along the way this was referred to as a "streamlined process," which pegged my irony meter.

It's a simple number that I can obtain in the time it takes me to log in to my account on Capital One's web site. It's a simple number that a dealership can obtain in a few minutes with a phone call if I'm trading in a car. It's ridiculous that it's taking weeks to communicate a simple piece of information that's readily available.

I have two pieces of advice:

-Finance with a local bank or credit union. Do business with an entity that won't "streamline" the process. Do business somewhere you can walk in and talk to humans in person and get answers.

-If you're stuck on Step 15 and have your car financed, find out from VW if they've requested the payoff and then start hassling your lender to process the request.

I had a loan with Capital One. I completed the buyback Dec. 19. Loan paid off last week.

Congratulations. Looks like you got through before they "streamlined" the process.

did you have any overpayments due to you? if so have you received them yet? I had my turn in last thursday, 01/05, and VW will be paying an amount over what my balance is currently because I made a payment in between final offer and scheduled buyback date.

I do have an overpayment of about $300 owed to me. I haven't received it yet, but I figure the bank may take a few more weeks to process it.

I completed my buyback on Dec 30th, and my loan is still not paid off yet and the credit union doesn't see anything "pending." Is this what you experienced prior to them paying it off? Did it one day just magically get paid?

I never made any phone calls throughout the process. I just logged in and saw it paid off one day last week.

Guess what? Those of us that bank with a credit union and have had our documents stuck in step 15 just as long as you are still stuck there too.

Have you called your credit union? I bet you'd be able to speak to someone directly about moving things along. That was my point. The big national banks, Capital One in my case, are nigh impenetrable when it comes to getting information.

Yes actually about 2-3 times a week since the first week of December. On a first name basis with the woman who handles verifications. We even asked if it would help to send a 10 day payoff quote to VW along with the per diem to help speed this along. Absolutely nothing and claims isn't setup to receive anything of that sort which would actually speed the process up.

So your credit union isn't the holdup. There are multiple bottlenecks in the process and it sounds like mine was my bank. I'm sure VW is doing its share of not being in a hurry.

Ours is VW sitting on it. First they blame auditors but ours already was in and out in November. CU hasn't been contacted at all. At this point it's VW themselves which is what makes me more mad. On paper it is a simple process. In the end they didn't set realistic timeframes for anything so now they are trying to get all new files out in the unrealistic timeframe while handling the backlog. We're just in backlog hell which based on math won't be done until at least end of Feb at their Nov 20th rate.

Got my offer this morning. Squeaky wheel FTW.

Sorry to rain on your parade but it wasn't anything you did. A ton of us from around your timeline have received offers and appointments in the last few days.

Coincidence? I think not!

Who knows. Just happy to know whether or not I need to change the oil now. Or buy a tire. Or a battery. Or a headlight.

Absolute coincidence. I'm just around the same timeline as you and got my offer a few days earlier, and I contacted nobody. A few other people I know, same exact results.

Regardless, glad this is over for you and I and hopefully everybody else from the same timeline soon!!!
