[WP] internet goes down. An emergency public broadcast on the television plays "STAY INDOORS AND DO NOT LOOK OUTSIDE." The radio simultaneously broadcasts the message "EVACUATE IMMEDIATELY, GET TO HIGH GROUND." - PART 4

PART 4

What followed in the next 5 minutes was nothing short of chaos. As Patrick drove as fast as he reasonably could, dodging abandoned cars or holes that had appeared in the ground amongst other debris Julie watched on. She watched the unrelenting blood which seemed to follow them no matter where they went, she saw what remained of the few survivors in the city most of which were killed in horrific ways. Their limbs would be torn off as they were still alive, their insides pulled out through their mouths as they struggled to breathe. The most empowering feeling was guilt, the only reason they were being killed there and then was because they lead the monsters to them. They most probably would have been killed later on like herself and Patrick likely will do soon, but she took that extra time away from them.

One man bellowed from a bedroom window to keep it down as the car roared past, but he was quickly surprised to see a swarm of black 6 legged freaks approach him and rip his skin off his still beating chest. Julie sometimes saw them eating the fallen, half the time they were still alive. They had originally planned to take the quickest route out of the city but the monsters were everywhere requiring many detours. One road came to a dead end but not because of buildings, the monsters had built a wall of human body parts to block the way. It had done its intended purpose for numerous other drivers but Julie was lucky to have a veteran protecting her, he had maneuvered the car around the others and smashed through a garden fence and driven around the house to the road on the other side, all the while the monsters gathered and gave chase.

Their numbers did not dwindle as they had hoped they might as 5 minutes turned into hours, luckily the fuel in the car was almost full when they first set off. That first monster Julie had looked at still spoke to her from time to time, it tormented her and demanded she stop running so he could devour her sooner. Apparently he had dibs on her, as he liked to call it. She did not know if he could hear her thoughts but she tried not to think about that, all she could do was keep her mind on what was outside as it helped to drain all thought. The streets were still covered in blood and littered with entrails, bones and half eaten limbs. 'Do not look outside' didn't do it justice, is that really the best they could come up with? Julie caught another gust of human rot and promptly threw up again with which Patrick just glanced at, it had become a common thing now and even he could barely hold it in.

Who does this? Why? The monster that was following her, it said they had been sleeping for millions of years. Why rise out of the ground now?

You could never comprehend us, ant

Ant was her new pet name, the monster had not told her what it was called just that it was there to devour her and that's all she needed to know. They eventually came to less populated roads which meant less of everything, less blood, less guts, less bone, less monsters.

"What do you think they meant by 'get to high ground'?" Patrick had broken her train of thought, if only for a moment as she didnt reply. "There must be a good reason for it but I dont see what significance high ground has in this situation" Julie looked at Patrick with a raised eyebrow.

"Really? That's what you are thinking right now? the technicalities of the warning message?" Patrick shot a glance to her and back to the road.

"Yeah... I guess you're right, this feels like the end of the world"

"It IS the end of the world Patrick" Julie didn't know why she was getting so mad at him, perhaps it was his ability to keep a calm demeanor about him despite everything that was happening and everything they were seeing.

"I'm sorry Julie, lets just get out of the city it seems there are less of them the further we go, we still have plenty of petrol left" They were going for their safe retreat in the pine forests, it was Patricks second home as he liked to call it and acted as an emergency shelter should anything catastrophic like this happen. "The retreat is in high altitude so thats fortunate at least"

Julie ignored what he said, it didn't matter where they went they were going to die.

Finally, you are beginning to understand the severity of your situation

God she wished he would shut up, hopefully he would stop once they got far enough away. She had a mental image of the monster grinning once again, she didn't know if he was showing her or if she was just thinking it. They eventually came to forest roads, the scenery here wasn't too appealing either. There were bodies hanging from almost every single tree branch, abandoned cars littered the road like a festival was being held in the forest. Blood was smeared on car windows and spinal cords hung over doors and the trees had seemingly been painted red, their leaves looking as if they were ripe for falling. This felt more horrific than the city, but at least there were less monsters here.

Another hour passed as they drove, they still had to take detours as monsters still lurked the roads hunting for any survivors. This trip would normally only take 2 hours but so far it had taken 6, the sun had come up and day was in full bloom showing off the full effect the terror and carnage the monsters had created. For once in her life Julie preferred the dark.

"... SHIT!" Patrick shouted as he slammed on the brakes. The road ahead was blocked by two abandoned cars with no way around them, they were blocked off by a sheer drop on the right and a short vertical mud cliff on the left. "...fuck" Patrick said.
