My opinion on goalies + reviews

Discussion

Alright so this is a toughie. There's a few types of people when it comes to goalies; some think only size matters , some think that it's all about your playstyle and his aggressiveness and some think they're just all the same. I'm a big believer in that different goalies work for different ways of defence because some G's do better in different situations. Also u/anonmarmot makes some great reviews on goalies if you want some more guys to check out, his opinion might be different from yours but I think he nailed most of them. Let me break this down for you tho.

Hextall

I was on this grind for AT LEAST 300-400 games. He's a 6'3 standup goalie with great glove stats (btw don't trust these stats most of the time) and that's his thing, glove saves. It's just impossible to score on him gloveside and it isn't easier on the blocker either. It's REMARKABLE what he can do with that but a recurring theme is gonna be if they have a strength, they're going to have a weakness. For Hexy it's rebounds. If you get one of those opponents that go for mainly rebounds then you can count yourself out of that game, he just hates to take that puck into posession and it can be a real killer sometimes. Everything else he's pretty much above average in, he can get that pokecheck and is aggressive enough where the opponent tends to gets surprised. Highly recommended.

Price

Let's go straight for a goalie that I DO NOT like. Carey is also 6'3 but he has a thing where he slouches down A LOT and comes out of the net way too much for his own good that there's these absolutely massive holes that the opponent can snipe on for days, I'd only use this guy in lower divisions or if you really know how to stop a good snipe, since if you're good at that he's remarkable at everything else. He's super super super fast, positions himself good and can get you out of some STICKY situations. Impossible to score on a breakaway on and doesn't giveaway a rebound, basically the opposite of Hexy.

Turco

Recently got on this grind and have been enjoying him. Turco is a shorter one tho, about 5'11 standup but I feel like he's a nice mix between Hextall but goes a bit more the way Price is. He's naturally small so he's gonna have a bit of difficulties getting those snipes but he can definitely manage it and never thought it was a problem, can easily defend so that your opponent doesn't get too many good shots on him. Anything else he's almost Carey Price level but just almost. Doesn't give rebounds, gets those sweet sweet robberies and very fast so he's super good at taking one-timers. I'm still trying to form an opinion on him since he seems like he plays kinda sloppy but he gets the job done so I'm fine with him, currently has 53-3-0 and 1.79 GAA and 84.88 sv% which is atleast average but you should see the shit I make him go through lol.

Big goalies (Bishop, Smith, Rinne)

Okay so I haven't used any of these but have matched up with them on a regular basis and damn do I like how they play so much that I'm looking at picking up ASG Smith (he isn't as big as Bishop but you should see him in net). The thing about these goalies is that they don't really leave much room to snipe on which is a great advantage, but the bigger problem is how much slower they are so 1T's and breakaways are always tough, but you can get a Bishop for quite cheap so he really does do the trick in the net if you just need someone who will cover you for snipes and your D will do the rest. I honestly couldn't tell a time where I've had just an absloute madman snipe on any of these guys because THERE'S NOTHING TO SHOOT AT. If you ever play me just use Bishop and you got the W.

Kolzig / consistent goalies

This is the most safe option tho, guys like Kolzig or like a Dubnyk, Luongo are the first to come to mind. They don't have a weakness or a strength, they just do everything great.

Diamonds in the rough

These are the goalies that I don't hear anyone using but always have trouble scoring on due to their great positioning and just all around surprisingly good goalies. MOV/TOTW Andersen, ASG Huet, HWN/SS Bryzgalov.

STAY AWAY FROM

Well this is my personal opinion on goalies that are absolute trash but here we go: Joseph, Crawford, Fleury. It's a pleasure whenever one of these comes against me, they just really can't stop anything and don't have any strengths or consistency to them but I don't know they might work for some.

TL;DR Looking for a consistent fucker? Get Kolzig. Looking to stop those snipes? Get Hexy. Looking for a guy that can do almost everything spectacularly? Turco or Price. You on a budget? Luongo, Dubnyk, Bishop. You like big guys? Rinne, Bishop, Smith.

So in my head I have only a few types of goalies

  • Those who can have amazing glove and are average at everything else (Hextall)

  • Those who have an average glove but are amazing at everything else (Price, Turco)

  • Those who are big enough to accidentally be good (Rinne, Smith, Bishop)

  • Those who just position themselves just right to annoy the hell out of you (Bryz, Huet, Andersen)

It's all 'bout whatchu want bebe
