Are Jaguar Warriors of any use?

I mean, Aztec champions are cheaper, easier to mass and already beat most infantries.

They are better against infantry than champions. So if facing goths, celts, aztec mirror might consider using them.

Aztecs tend to flood EEW in early imp and anyone's response would be champions. JW is there to protect EEW from champions. Champions are sure easy to mass, have 13+8 attack, but Jaguars have a huge attack bonus vs infantry, making them way more cost efficient.

If the enemy UU infantry is used, they can be effective as well, with the exception of samurai.

Samurai and Jags are equal in expansions. It's down to first hit.

Well, it means they are not really that effective. Aztecs have other things to take down Samurai, ehm arbalest, ehm champion.

Last time I checked, Samurai beat Aztec Champs

Samurai has the fastest ROF for Infantry. Samurai beat Japanese champs and Japanese champs beat Aztec Champs so really your best bet is Jaguars or Arbalest.

SO is also an option if you can protect them.

What about cost efficiency? Samurai is tiny bit more expensive than champs. Have you tried that??

Sometimes if you're in castle blood you might get jaguar warriors while your opponents get woad raiders, huskarls, berserks, and kambit warriors

Well there isn't really much to say about them besides that they counter infantry. A good thing about them is that they can hold their own against imperial infantry even if they are not elite, although the elite upgrade is very important and you should not forget it. Technically they should make a good combo with eagle warriors but they are still weak to some units like gunpowder and heavy cavalry, so it's a good habit to mix in some pikemen and skirmishers with them.

Sure, to kill noob Goth players that think nothing stops huskarl spam. Used them at least once for this.

Goth HC+BC underrated so badly here

BC?

Bombard cannon.

Since the usual counter to goths by aztec would be Jaguars, Goths can add in hand cannons to combat this. Aztecs have siege onagers which will destroy ranged units like HC, until goths bring out bombard cannons to kill the onagers from range. Aztec eagles are pretty fast and can snipe the siege and so it cycles

Alrighty, is BC = Bombard Cannon the norm, or is BBC = Bombard Cannon the norm? Bombard Cannon is what I guessed, but I thought we used BBC.

Hilariously, with equal economies the Goths can still blitz them to death with Champs because they vastly outproduce Jaguar warriors (even from multiple castles) and can overpower them.

They have their niche but imo are a very poor unit and inferior in most ways to their most similar counterpart, the Samurai.

Aztecs will crush goths with jaguars as long as they can stay 200 pop

It's true Gothic champs cost effectively kill elite jaguars but pop space becomes an issue and in that situation to save pop space you'd wanna mix HC as Goths. Something 97.1% of players who play Goths forget such a unit exists.

Aztecs are overall stronger though. Access to SO is nice

I don't think so, in any real battle it wouldn't make sense. You mass the jaguar warrior and then they are unstoppable against goths. I have even seen games where aztec war, jaguars just eat a way bigger number of champs

3
ParticleMarehorse-poking expert•

True, if massed that's the case. Jaguars trade well and Goth fall off in power over time.

I'm mainly referring to early to mid Imperial during which pop efficiency matters less. That's when the Gothic production speed advantage is at its most noticeable. You can easily have a 3-1 numerical advantage with your Champions during the first encounter and from there it snowballs into an insurmountable advantage even against jags.

they can hold their own well against teutonic knights for an infantry unit, the only other one that can really is the samurai.

as it stands, theyre probably not worth it unless the enemy is going full champion on your ass

In aztecs mirror they often too slow to get, and enemy is since castle halfway teched into arbs already and may even have some xbows left. Very risky, but ofc onager jags win arb eagle

Tg they strong vs goths etc but depends so much on civ comp

Aztec wars. If game reaches imp u will definitely see jags to counter eagles/champs

rarabara•

Make them to kill rams on the bottom of your castle

1v1 Aztec War to deal with Eagles lategame not early imp though

When you don't wanna wait getting militia to Champion and need a quick substitute

Vs Infantry civs even situationally against Samurai and TKS

Jags are pop effective vs most other UU infantry besides the above 2 UUs I just mentioned

Spirit of the Law actually talked about this: https://youtu.be/sd3YuOLSa40?t=8m5s It sounds like ideally you should mix some of them in with eagle warriors alongside champions.
