Met with a former colleague of mine and...

I went to lunch with a very respected, former colleague of mine. I told her that I no longer went to church and didn't believe, and she told me that she, her husband (former bishop), and her brother in law (former stake pres) had done their research and no longer believed either. They were all very staunch believers.
But, no longer.

One common thread we see here is that many exes were so rock solid they would never believe they would leave. I know I was in that category.

So was I. My life theme was "follow the brethren."

This. Was. Me.

I was hardcore TBM - had been through a terrible betrayal by my ex-spouse (who introduced me to the church) but I stayed oh-so-faithful. People even commented on it. Funny thing - none of those people ever ask why I resigned, even though they're all still friends!

I am sure they know why you left. They gossip about it all the time. But they never bothered to ask you why you left. They know why you resigned in the same way they know the church is true.

I go to BYU-I...and I'm just WAITING for graduation so I can go off the grid, religiously speaking. Used to be an unquestioning member, and now look where I am.

Your post was the best thing I have read today. When people like that are leaving it has got the hurt TSCC. It warms my little apostate heart.

There are many who have believed and served but no longer believe because they discovered the real truth. Hopefully all will discover the truth.

We desire all to receive it.

Not sure if this is too much personal information, but what age range are you talking about? Former SP? I always imagine it's 40-year-olds and younger who are leaving.

I left when I was 50. There are several of us that I know about who have left at that age or older.

I imagine that takes a lot of courage. Congratulations!

Thanks.

My former profession was in accounting. I know about sunk costs and how you should never consider how much money you have sunk into something. The only thing to consider is if the asset is worth persuing. That kind of thinking helped me to get out quickly.

I'm in that group. Left way older than 50.

same here. Same with my husband.

I didn't even join until I was older than 40. Resigned about 10 years later. There are many more Baby Boomer converts leaving than people realize. Our group is the one that fought for civil rights, and campaigned against Vietnam, etc. I've heard that Boomer converts are the fastest growing group leaving the church - we don't like being lied to.

Some Stake Presidents are under 40, apparently. My parents said that their new SP is a guy I knew in youth who is a year or two younger than me, and I'm 38. I asked if he was just a counselor but my dad said he is SP. He's a doctor though, so I guess he is just more blessed.
