That's why I worked 5 package stores so the cashiers wouldn't know. But a look into the recycling bin at 2 weeks always conjured up some quick math. Never stopped me though.
I understand your discomfort with the further erosion of privacy protections. I'm from the IT world, and I always assume everything I do on my computer or with my phone is visible to someone. You might look into utilizing a VPN - though I'm not sure that is 100% foolproof either. (Again, I assume nothing is).
