Casual Players: Do you ever feel like this game has elitist overtones?

Yes and I'm okay with it. Does every game need to be a casualfest?

This sub is crazy elitist but super helpful. Any time I post a question, I get voted to zero but then I get like 3-5 solid answers

There's a podcast where developer Jonathan Rogers appears and describes his take on the new player experience.

I believe he said something to the extent that new players often get caught up in trying to learn everything at once and are afraid to make mistakes and that, instead, a new player should just try something and have fun with it.

I agree and disagree. I agree that trying to learn everything at once is impossible overwhelming stressful and not fun. I agree on making mistakes. On the other hand, a lot of mistakes are difficult to learn from without seeking outside resources. A lot of mechanics are hidden and you would have to read the wiki/forums to fully learn them. In addition, this game is extremely punitive for making mistakes. If you fuck up your entire skill tree you have to reroll from scratch. That can be really frustrating especially since new players level slowly so they see rerolling as losing weeks of progress.

It would be nice if regrets could be traded up at a vendor for a full respec item.

Or if you could trade in 1 level for a full respec :D

Say you're level 75 and you need a full respec. You're 60% of the way to level 76. You fall down to level 74 + 60% and get a full respec.

Since levels are harder to get at higher levels, this makes the cost proportionate to the number of respec points you get back.

I don't hate that idea.

What do you meen by casual. Someone who doesn't know the game or cares to learn, but thinks they should be able to play any way.

Or people that just don't have time to play. I play about 10 hours a week. But have always made my own builds, most of them successful. I even make a couple of low level dueling characters every league, that can stay in the top 5.

Work has been murder last few weeks. My end game build just got to a2m.

So am I a filthy casual or elitist? I like to watch tv while I play so filthy casual right?

I'm the same, except sounds like I currently have more time than you currently. Playing an hour or two a night and my max block gladiator is running T14 to 14 maps now. I feel like a lot of people just want their hands held, but you can play this game casually, and research your builds, mechanics, etc and be successful in the game even with limited playtime.

I also watch tv while I play.

1
bpg609OP•

By researching the builds do you mean figuring it all out on your own from scratch or googling someone else's build and research?

Because then you're just sharing elite knowledge, and joining the elitists.

A true casual like myself tries to avoid reading complete builds because they spoil self discovery.

Yes.

yes, but I don't mind, what I would really like is that temp leagues were a bit more casual friendly

How are temp leagues not casual friendly? Just curious

challenges require you to grind a lot and some challenges are based on RNG when you grind, IE one of the hardest challenges for me last league was find an unique strongbox, the average non-casual player will find it easier since it runs like 200 maps per second, i couldn't make it because well I didn't have the time to play so I didn't get the portal effect that was I wanted from the breach league :(

and paying isn't an option since i'm casual and that means I don't hoard a lot of currency and the strongboxes were being sold for exalts last league

that's how I perceive at least

Is it unfriendly to casuals to have challenges that are aimed at hardcore players? Why cant you be happy with 25/40 if you're already at terms with being a casual player?

I said I didn't mind, and the portal was the tier 2 last league I got to 20 challneges IIRC, the other 4 to get the 24/40 were just too hard for me

1
bpg609OP•

You don't have to do the challenges. In fact, I don't even know they exist. I just play new league to get access to beta content.

I mean, I like some of the rewards, most of the time I don't care for them, but I really liked the portal from breach league

As a fellow time limited player I just do not pay any attention to challenges. I only have time to have fun. And measuring my manhood, by the # behind my name is not fun.

again, lik i said on my other comments, I just wanted really bad the portal effect last league, this league, meh

Not the game, just the reddit community surrounding the game.

Somewhat to a degree like most multiplayer games. But the community overall has been extremely helpful when asked questions about builds, trading, or the overall game. I'd say the top 1% can be sort of elitist sometimes but I am fine with that. Just got to take the memes with a grain of salt.

If you are truly an elite player you should be more than willing to help newbies. I consider myself "elite" and often help people in game and on the forums as I feel it's part of my duty.
