In hindsight its easy to say that he should have let it go and settled for points.

But then this is a guy who has only one podium in two years and had been pretty much written off as a championship contender not too long ago.

It can't be easy to live in the shadow of his famous brother without single win to show for it. One of the problems with big expectations is that the denunciation when you struggle is disproportionate to your actual results. Last year many people were saying that he didn't even deserve a place in Moto2.

Its got to play havoc with your confidence and self-belief. And then to sweat and struggle and fight through a race to within spitting distance of a win and just simply leave it?

Lets just say - its much easier to do something like that when you're someone like Luthi or Zarco with many many victories under your belt - without the pressure of being "brother to the mighty Marc Marquez", rather than being just "Alex, one of the 34 riders in Moto2".

And after a mistake it's always easyer to say: 'should have done that differently'

Also a bit unfair how Marc told the press "[Alex] is faster than me"

As someone who has a younger brother that did the same sport as me I am sure Marc actually meant that when he said it. I have also told people that my younger brother is better than me although people disagreed with me.

The thing is if you get good at something you have spent so much time analyzing your mistakes that if you look back at your old games/races then all you see is mistakes and flaws. So if you compare that old version of yourself to your brother you think he is better. So when you see your brother all you see is "ah he doesnt make this mistake I always made" or "well he still makes this mistake but it's really easy to fix you just have to..." so you get that picture of someone who is quite similar to you but with more potential.

It is hard to be objective especially since a lot of older brothers have that inner motivation to never lose to their younger brother. So you build your younger brother up as someone with insane potential and that is what keeps pushing you to work more than him because you feel like if you dont he is gonna catch up in a very short time.

I understand that sentiment with two younger brothers, but Marc probably just didn't consider the pressure he would put his brother under. Marc seeing Alex ride around on his factory Honda in 2014 Valencia testing probably inflated his own perceptions about Alex.

Yeah, he definitely had no intention to put more pressure on him. They train all the time together, I'm sure there are times when Alex beats Marc, which probably confirm that statement in Marc's head.

Also, as silly as it might sound, it might well be easier for him to beat Marc, the guy he's literally spent all his life knowing and observing, in training when they are just having fun privately than for him to win a race with so many factors that can affect his performance and all eyes and pressure on him.

Great post, heavily agree.

Boy that was a nasy crash bike could have easily landed on his head

He was four corners away from the end of the race, and 1 second behind his team mate. There is not enough of a chance to catch up in that scenario - and not settling means he lost a chance of a 1-2 finish for his team.

A more mature rider would have seen at that point that second was the best result he could get, and not left his team manager being caught shaking his head on TV.

Felt sorry for the bloke, first time I've seen him do well in moto2, hope he can redeem himself next race.

That's a pretty grim thing to say dude/dudette. He's just a concerned parent who wants the best for his kids. Imagine if someone said they smiled every time your mum or dad were worried about you.

I know they're famous and in the public eye, but come on - have at least a little human sympathy. Jesus christ.

wow that could have easily killed him; scary!

I'm not a fan of Alex Marquez. I often find myself rooting for whoever he is battling against. That crash was painful for me to watch. I feel he earned better than what the results show, and I genuinely wish he had finished on the podium. I guess it's all part of racing, though. I hope he's ok and that he comes back strong in Austin, TX.

Wild bull like bike. Thanks God he is OK.

Asking a lot from that rear. Ouch, hope his wrist is OK.

DYLANGRAYISAWANKER•

Yep. The bike even gave him a warning before. Silly mistake. Hope for better next time.

FullTopMax•

Yep. Pretty weird mistake. He got away with it before the apex, lost the rear for a moment and got back into it. Then decided to pin it again.

What a weekend for Marquez bros, highside, lowside...but that's what happens sometimes, with their aggressive riding. Marc was really really trying to get away from the pack, pushed really wildly until the front said no.

1
buhuhilus•

That wasn't a warning, he pushed too hard the rear and had a TC and a slide. He made it. But then he thought he would give it a little more gas so he doesn't lose the time because he had few corners left. The bike said no. He should have settled for 2 after that first mistake but he couldn't do the computation fast enough.

His Fathers reaction to the crash was...scary.

That sad walk back to the paddock, though.

I like the downvotes too because i was just rewatching Moto2 race and Colin Edwards and Hodgson were saying the same thing, on BTSports.
