New player (Mesmer) - entry to PVE content
Hi all,
Looking at the meta for Raids and comments here it looks like I should be looking for Minstrel Ascended gear and filling a support tank role, which I'm happy with, and I think I have my head around. However, there doesn't seem to be an Exotic equivalent to Minstrel, meaning that getting entry gear isn't possible. Is this the case? If so, what is my next course for gearing up?
Thanks in advance

So the basic Chrono set is Commander's leggings and everything else Zerker. If you want to not use the expensive Boon Duration utility buff, you swap in more commanders trinkets. For tanking, you pick up two Knight's ascended rings to boost your Toughness to over 1500. You do this so you can always be both roles, the tank or the support chrono.
Don't go Minstrels for your first set as it locks you fully into the tank role and you cannot play the secondary chrono if you group already has a tank. Minstrel's is for the Chrono who already has their zerk/commander's set and feels like tossing gold away onto the next one.
Ah, that makes a lot of sense, thank you.
For that set, I'm assuming that flat exotics is 'fine', with ascended trinkets and backs desirable? Ive also seen some builds with two main hands and some with just one shared between both sets, is it best practice to have two or three swords, with a shield (where sw/sw sw/sh is the right load out)
Also, is it better to stack Avengers for Alacrity, or Swordsmen?
Yes exotics are fine, ascended are preferred of course. Back pieces are usually exotics, you place a platinum doubloon inside so you can get the 4% easy boon duration. I personally use Knights there rather than zerk for the extra bit of toughness just in case but zerk works too. I run Fractals so I can't use the full exotic trinkets as I need the AR slots from the ascended ones.
Weapons wise, one sword with a sigil of concentration and then a shield with a force sigil. For the other off-hand it's your preference really; sometimes a focus for the pull (like in Vale Guardian to get seekers off the group) or the offhand sword as default. You don't need two mainhand swords, you can place an offhand in the secondary slot and it will use your mainhand sword.
