[NSV]New and got to week 2. Need (gentle) patting on head, please.
Morning all.
I'm new to Keto. Massively new. However, after talking to a friend a few weeks ago - who managed massive weight loss on keto - I wanted to give it a go.
Not primarily for the weight loss, even though I could stand to loose a few pounds, but for the cunning advantage it would give me cycling.
At least.. I think that's how it should work. I cycle brevets regularily and struggled with energy intake in the past. I had to keep shoveling handfuls of gummi bears into my face to keep going - and my taste for sweets declined rapidly over the first 500g or so. Now obviously if my body were to love fat as a power source, I would be lugging around a lot anyway and could skip the sweets. Substitute a little with cheese and coffee and be sorted.
There might be a drawback or two to the plan, but I'll work on that when I get there.
Anyway... currently on day 10 of my new and adjusted diet. Keto with less than 20g of carbs is the plan. Carb-counting is easy - been doing it for many years due to type 1 diabetes. Not easy is "not freaking out over having to eat sugar to counter a low".
Technically I know that this won't ruin my keto - it's not that I ate too much carbs and produced insulin, but rather than my insulin was already too high, and I should have adjusted it beforehand. Work in progress, I suppose.
The last weekend was a bit horrible, to be honest. I felt completely drained and had no energy for anything. Especially sports. This week is looking much better, though. Gotten back to the "longish" ride to work (~15km one way) and will hopefully be back at the "long" version next week. I still feel kinda sluggish, but that could also be lack of sleep.
Total daily insulin requirement already down by 65%. Which is a lovely number I can throw around. Next stop: finding a friendlier lunchtime snack. My current cheese + olives + salad works, but lacks diversity.

Strength and stamina deficits are totally normal for the first 6 weeks or so as you fat adapt.
Make sure you're on top of your electrolytes.
Thanks. I don't like it, but every time I'm reminded it's normal it is a bit easier :)
Sodium and magnesium are taken care of. Potassium turns out to be slightly trickier here, with no "low-salt" alternatives readily available.
Spinach and avocado's have a lot. Avocado's are like the perfect keto food except I have shit for luck finding them near ripe, and they are only perfectly ripe for about 45 minutes.
Spinach/Avocado and Goats Cheese salat for dinner today. Thanks to yours and DClawdudes suggestions. I'll find something. Worst case I'll do some internet order from the UK.
Avocado and spinach are your friends then. Meat and fish also have potassium but it's not always on the label.
Does anyone near you sell Herbamare? I'm assuming you're somewhere in EU. If you're able to find their low salt/sodium one, that helps!
I'll have a look. EU is right, and hey.. 21st century and all. We can shop on the interwebs.
When I read that it can take as short as 2 days - 1 week for people to gain their energy back, I was constantly doubting my entry to Keto, but after 2 solid weeks I was finally free of the "flu". Just keep at it, and the energy will surprise you one day.
