Burn the tape

Tonight was one of those games (pickup at least, thank god) where nothing seemed to go right. Routine saves missed, bad positioning and equipment just feels off. Everything felt off, like reactions were just a bit too slow, or just rotten luck. Like I'd make a blocker save, but oops it bounced up and over my shoulder and into the net. Oh look, the puck I thought I saved bounced off the butt end of my stick and into the net.

I've been trying really hard to work on fixing some bad habits I've acquired (landing on my pad face when sliding left or right, tucking a leg under me sometimes, not covering angles correctly when the play is at a really sharp angle), but damn. If you see a bright light in the direction of Texas, it was me.

So, fellow tenders, since misery loves company, tell me about some of the times you were playing and just nothing was going right for you.

I gave up 17 goals one game. 17-3. Worst part was the other team didn't have a goalie....

Can't get much worse than that

Ouch, but hey at least you went out and played. I refuse to play an actual game that means anything until I don't suck as badly as I do now.

I'll tell a different tale of things going wrong.

Championship game in the morning, heading to the rink after breakfast thinking about my warmup routines an hour before the game. Arrive and about to get out of the car when I get a team group text, asking where I am and the team was looking for me.

The time of the game was texted the day before, but I misread it and had a busy and tiring night of playoffs that I didn't bother looking at it again to correct myself. Ended up rushing to get suited up, entered the rink about a couple minutes into the 1st period with no warm-ups.

I played relatively well, but I had the nagging feeling of fucking up the entire game. Believing that I could be playing better/be more comfortable if I came early like I usually do, have my pre game routine and warm up. Ended up losing by a goal.

This happened to me last week.... Not a championship game but still. Thought the game was at 1020, got there at 940 to get ready and look at the screen and see my team. "hmmm thats weird they have the time for the game wrong at 940" I start walking up to the locker and go "hmmmm thats weird my whole team is on the... oh fuck." I got on the ice 5 minutes into the game. They had scored 2 empty netters, then with out warmups and a shaken team / ego I let in 8 on 30...... We lost 10 to 4 haha.

This was me last week - playoff semi final. First period was great. Good tracking, skating, rebound control. After those first 12 minutes the rails fell off and the other team scored on each of their last 4 legitimate scoring chances. I think I only had about 8 saves in the last 2 periods, mostly on shots from the point I could track all the way in. Everything else found the back of the net because I am terrible.

No way man, you're learning. Only way to get better is to suck at first!

Oh my yes, it was a Tuesday night and everything went by me. I wasn't getting much help, but I wasn't helping myself. The final straw was a shot from center ice that came bouncing in and I thought just stand and squeeze the pads it would bounce up into them. Nope, the bounce was just perfect enough to land between the skates and through. It was a very very bad night.

My last game on Sunday was awful. Last regular game of the season, got a 1 day tournament this weekend (so I get to redeem myself hopefully!).

To set the scene, it's a small rink, realistically too small for 5 on 5. It's got a wall of windows at one end and it's a nice warm day so the whole rink is toasty warm! Also the sun is reflecting off the ice so glare is bad at one end of the rink. Also, dark navy blue kick boards to hide the puck!
First goal came about 1:30 into the game (3rd or 4th shot on goal), that was the 1st of 4 goals that period...
At the short break between periods I take the maltese off and try and cool down, but I'm already struggling! Second period starts (down 4-0) and we start well, bringing it back to 4-4. Suicide pass from behind the net, intercepted in the tiny zone and puck goes under pad, gets stuck and whistle goes. One ref starts setting up for a face off in our D zone, the other calls a goal... My pad was a good foot from the goal line! Think we finished the second period 6-5 down. Third period, puck behind net lots of pushing and shoving and the nets pushed on my head/neck. No penalty, on the play, neither ref checks in with me (also no back up goalie so I'm staying in anyway!) Felt a bit shaken but moving okay-ish but still overheating! A couple of easy shots glove side beat me and that's the game 10-6 final score. Never been more demoralised. Neck very stiff now and I've a game with my second team on Friday as well as a tournament on Sunday. Hoping I can get the neck loosened up before then!

Had another game this season where I couldn't stop a damn thing, ended as a 9-4 loss and I'm stunned it wasn't more! Shots coming straight from the centre taking the face offs in our D zone. Got beat twice that way, another shot rolled up the paddle hit the blocker and dropped behind and rolled in. Easy glove saves were going through as well. It's tough knowing your off day has screwed it for the whole team but that's the position I guess, never had any of the team call me out on it which is nice.

Hope my sob story helps you feel better (I'm going for a short drop in tonight to see how the neck's holding up so I may have another story for you later!!)

Loosened off enough to play tonight. Put on a set of Helite 4s I've been meaning to try and played stand up, bit different to my normal style and gave up a couple of howlers, but a few shooters didn't know what to do! Always fun to mess about with different things to reset things! Probably stiff again tomorrow morning but we'll see!

I legitimately had this just happen to me. Playoff game, semi finals for my league team, and everything you described was the same for me. Felt off, pads wouldn't cooperate, wasn't totally focused. It sucks, but sometimes you just have to fight thru it and remember the next game is another day, with time to recover and adjust. I'm sorry that happened to you :( it's definitely tough to go thru. Lemme know how your next game goes.

A game I played a few weeks ago. We lost with 11-15 (really). I think almost every shot on goal went in. I was too slow, not focussed (and yes 7 of them were backdoor goals but I still feel I should have stopped them). Two times I thought the puck bounced to the right while in reality it was lying in front of an open net left. (And I was looking for it right.) Worst goal was when I stopped the puck but didn't cover it, passed it to the person next to me and shouted "play it!" only to find out later he was a player from the other team. Turns out he was the only one on the other team that wore the same colour of socks as my team.
