Edit: Gone for one with no one over 35 (Sorry Best). A few 50-50's where my Leinster Bias may have kicked in. Carbery over Jackson and R.Byrne, providing his goal kicking improves, huge prospect; no doubts about his skill and has versatility on his side. Payne brings versatility (as well) and experience to the back line (If needed), and an Ulster flag (They're fairly under represented in this 23). McCloskey unlucky to get in, as is Gilroy, but Schmidt doesn't seem to favour either of them anyway. Adam Byrne is class and I think he'll have solidified that position for himself in a couple of years with Sweetnam looking to take Zebo's spot and is unlucky to make the 23.
Yeah well reasoned. This is the team I'd be hoping for come 2019
Thanks! Yeah, it makes me giddy :D
Nothing against TOD he's a good player; but looking at his current standing in the team and the young talent we have coming through in the backrow I'd bet my left bollock he won't be near the 23, let alone as lock cover.
Leavy over VdF?
Yeah VDF is quality and could make it there but I prefer the balance in that back row, I think Leavy is gonna be a real beast in two years time. Conan gets the bench spot for me with the same thing in mind.
When you have two Second rows who are made to carry (hendo and Dillane) , you don't need the extra bit of carrying Leavy brings. Van Der Flier can carry well enough (we learnt as he played six against the all blacks in Chicago).
Also his ground game is a lot better.
What you are avoiding is Jordi Murphy. With those two second rows, and even with POM. The lineout won't be superb. If you have Murphy (who is an bloody excellent jumper), you have lineout dominance in attack.
Also Murphys ground game, and carrying are pretty decent. Though Cj will have to put in a mighty shift to make up for his carrying. Then you can have Conan come on for a wrecked Stander at 60 minutes. As a carrying machine.
You know, I completely blanked on Murphy definitely another option. Probably would throw him in there. Leavy v VDF is still one I think time will tell as they both grow. Leavy's ground game is getting better and better and I have a feeling it's going be very close between the two of them in two years, my gut went with Leavy.
Really can't see McGrath holding off Marimon and even JGP in Leinster. Good player but celling isn't as high as the other two. Everything else I agree with but VDF over TOD on the bench.
Have to agree to disagree on that one, particular on McGrath's 'ceiling'. McGrath and Marmion was a 50-50 for me. I think McGrath has the potential to be Murray's successor for the 9 jersey. Looking remarkably good. I reckon O'Donnell would be a better option off the bench.
He's hardly going to be murrays replacement when he's only four years younger than him.
That's nonsense.
T.O.D. = Tommy O'Donnell? brave not to have a second row on the bench. That being said, I do think ToD is criminally underrated.
Yeah That's where this 23 lets itself down alright. Tell Rassie to develop T.O.D as a lock in preparation ;)
Bundee Aki?
I know he's undecided but he'd make the midfield choices very interesting.
Yeah, has the potential to cause headaches but not sure if schmidt will like his attitude. Couple that with the fact henshaw and ringrose will have had 3 years as a centre partnership with both hopefully reaching their full potential and he misses out.
Love Aki. Think he is a class act. He is a penalty machine. Very anti-Joe.
TOD gets dropped for Kieran Threadwell. Threadwell is a beast for a young second two, and will be coming into his own at that age.

Ireland World Cup 2019 squad Props: J. McGrath, C. Healy, T. Furlong, J. Ryan, F. Bealham Hookers: S. Cronin, N. Scannell, J. Treacy Second Rows: U. Dillane, I. Henderson, D. Toner, K. Aki Back 3: S. Zebo, A. Byrne, K. Earls, T. O'Halloran, J. Carbery, J. Stockdale
JOD's a back row, not a lock, but otherwise I'd say you're fairly spot on. Not sure Schmidt would go for both Byrne and Stockdale though, he'd probably go for the relative experience of, say, Gilroy ahead of them. Depending on how they all play over the next couple of years of course.
I actually meant Threadwell, but somehow had JOD in my head while typing. Silly me. I feel that he'll cap byrne this summer surely and go from there with him, he doesn't like Gilroy (shame because i really do) and if he isn't picking him now I don't think he'll be in the plans for much longer going forward, shame.

I dunno if Bundee will make the 23. He's good but I feel Joe will take a problem with his attitude issues. I'd sat he'll be part of the squad, you'd be mad not to, but regular starter? That's a difficult one. I dunno about Bleyendaal either. He'll be qualified but would he get the nod over the rapidly improving Paddy Jackson or the incredibly versatile Cadbury? Tough call.
Sexton will still be around by 2019 if managed correctly in my opinion, shows no signs of slowing down
He might be but I see Jacko stepping up.
John Ryan plays tighthead not loose head.
Also the third second row will be Predator or Threadwell unless James Ryan really picks up.
Couldn't remember which one Ryan was. Who'd be sub loosehead then?
Predator? Who's that?
Cian Healy.
Predator is Donnacha Ryan.
Do you think Ryan will still be part of the set up if this Racing move goes through? I'd love for him to still be in the squad but if Joe didn't pick Madigan this year I don't see him picking Ryan in 2019.
That being said I don't know if he'll have a choice considering our depth at second row and depth at 10 are very different.
Sio, Latu, Robertson, Coleman, Arnold, Pocock, Hooper, Timani, Genia, Foley, Naivalu, Beale, Kerevi, Folau, Hunt
Res. : Alaalatoa, Slipper, TPN, Tui, Higgingbotham, Powell, Hodge, Kuridrani
Hunt will be past it (maybe play role a la KB of bench) so I'd shift Folau to fullback and add a bolter in Kellaway to the wing. Kane Douglas will also have a role and I reckon Jed Holloway will be a Wallaby this year and also be part of the 23.
Hunt will be 32. He won't be past it. Whether he will be good enough at international level is a different question.
Kellaway might be a very good player in two years, but he might not. He's certainly showing potential, but lots of young players show potential but don't go on with it. Speight, DHP, Koroibete and a few others will also be pushing for wing spots, there is no lack of depth there.
I dislike Douglas and I think Holloway needs to show a lot more before he's in the discussion.
All good points, but bare in mind that your not the coach, Cheika is, and he trusts Kane Douglas. As Coach of the Tahs although he didn't play Holloway or Kellaway, he knows their capabilities and would definetly have earmarked them for the future.
Yeah I know, but this is just speculative. It's more than 2 years away, anything could happen.
South Africa finish top of their pool.
Sure, why not? It's either them or NZ but both are going through.
The bigger part of my prediction is that NZ won't be the completely and utterly dominant force of Rugby they are at the moment.
That sounds more like wishful thinking than reality. I doubt we will see a collapse of their current status within the next 2 years. It will eventually happen of course but by 2019? Nah, I can't see it. They'll be as competitive as they've ever been come 2019.
Theyre the best theyve ever been right now, barrett hitting his peak.. i really don't see that happening. It would have to be some almighty form slump
No, it's more I think that teams will figure out the Kiwis. They are an incredible team but they have their weaknesses and aren't invulnerable, if there is any team who can really push New Zealand and capitalise on any weakness in their play style it would be South Africa, they have an unparalleled variety of personnel and such dynamic players whatever weaknesses are found they can take advantage of.
Think the NBA when Jordan came back from that lockout season the game just changed overnight. That could happen to the Kiwis.

Is there much point playing Hartley if he's not captain and coming off the bench?
Get Taylor in there!
What about Thatcher? From the little I have seen of him, he looks godly.
I reckon Sinckler instead of Cole by 2019, and Robson/A.N Other instead of Care.
Yeah, I think Sinckler will be in there. As for 9, it's a shame Simpson never really got anywhere, but I'd love to see little Harry Randall going places by 2019.
pretty tasty!
I'd be surprised if Jones doesn't play Ford/Faz.
I have a feeling he'll keep Brown on too.
EDIT: Clifford is more likely to be in than Ewers.
I could see Fijian Joe taking that 23 jersey off May.
I doubt Jones would go into a game without a second (proper) outside half. Could see Te'o getting replaced by that half Italian lad at Saracens.
No idea. Will probably panic and revert to experience.

Mako, George, Cole, Lawes, Kruis, Itoje, Jones, Vunipola, Youngs, Ford, Daly, Farrell, Joseph, Nowell, Lozowski, Taylor, Genge, Sinckler, Launchbury, Armand, Robson, Teo'o, Watson
Lawes over Launchbury, who the hell are you Warren Gatland?
Also is there another Armand I dont know about? Because Don Armand is 28 and uncapped i doubt he'll be there...
Also wheres Robshaw, I think we've already established that Itoje is better at lock
Also please have phased out Ford by 2019
Also Watson is better at fullback than Lozowski, him in a 10-12 with Farrell would be better
Also is Sam Jones really our best openside option?
Yeah theres a few things here I dont agree with...
Lawes-Kruis is a much more balanced second row than Launch-Kruis
Armand is pretty versatile and I would not be surprised to see him break into the squad at some point although there are other options ie Wood/Williams/Hughes
Robshaw is class but I can't help but feel that Itoje is a 6 in EJ's mind
I reckon the Youngs-Ford partnership at Leicester might benefit him, especially with Toomua outside him
Based off Eddie's selections for Argentina and some of his previous interviews I have a feeling that he might see Lozowski as a 15 option in the future although obviously it's hard to see who in Jones's mind is the best long term 15 option
EJ is clearly a fan of Sam Jones, called him up to quite a few squads previously and it might be a bit too early for Underhill or one of the Curry's in the next WC, although I may be wrong
I'm saying Itoje-Kruis with Launch on the Bench, with Robshaw or someone like Clifford at 6.
Its a tried and tested pairing, Itoje provides cover at 6 but I certainly think EJ is starting to see hes a lock by a distance over a 6, hence why hes been playing there regardless of the number on his shirt.
Hopefully you're right as I really do rate Robshaw and think Itoje-Kruis is too effective a partnership to disrupt
Cole and Te'o will both be 32 by the time the World Cup rolls around.
32 isn't that old for a tighthead prop, he'll be on almost 100 caps by then as well. Hopefully we'll have a better bench option than a 32 year old Te'o though.

Don't think zebs/earls/sexton/pom/heaslip/d ryan /kearneys etc will be fit/1st choice. No idea for backrow/ locks so went with toner. No idea for FB but went for Toh cos he might get a good run in over next summer tours given historical injury profile for lions players. Ade/aki might be in green which could mean no ringrose/henshaw (1 will be injured). Like to think sweetnam will get a chance in green.
Either you're confused or i'm confused, is this meant to be the starting 23 for the next world cup? If so i'm not sure what you're smoking pal
If so i'm not sure what you're smoking pal
Dave Foley as backrow cover for Ireland over 2 years from now? Whatever he's smoking I'll take a bale of the stuff!
It's shit thread so I'm predicting players are injured etc
01 - Rob Evans, 02 - Ken Owens, 03 - Sampson Lee, 04 - Jake Ball, 05 - AWJ, 06 - Moriarty, 07 - Warburton (c), 08 - Faletau, 09 - Webb, 10 - Sam Davies, 11 - North, 12 - Scott Williams, 13 - JD2, 14 - Liam Williams, 15 - Halfpenny
16 - Kristian Dacey, 17 - Nicky Smith, 18 - Tomas Francis, 19 - Bradley Davies, 20 - Tipuric, 21 - Tomos Williams, 22 - Rhys Patchell, 23 - Hallam Amos
... but that's not the team that played in this year's 6N...
No Henson is a crime.
There is still a chance, at least he will be playing for a Welsh Region that is secur.... 'oh'
You know full well that Roberts will still be in that 23 somewhere.
Edit: is Sampson Lee the new Jack Norwell?
Please no
If we still have the same tight 5 as we do now in two years then we are in for a rough two years.
Kg Bradley Davies is still our third best 2nd row and Tomas Francis our 2nd best tighthead in 2 years then we are in for a very, very rough two years.
We're in for a rough two years.
One of the u20's props for Wales look promising. The one who looked like a fully grown man.
We actually have quite a lot of good prop prospects but none of them are ready yet and 2019 might be a bit soon for them. Dillon Lewis and Leon Brown at tighthead, Domachowski, Wyn Jones at loosehead. There's talent there. Im more concerned about the 2nd row talent coming through than front row.
What have you done with Biggar?
By 2019 he'll have been sacrificed to keep Jamie Roberts' playing career alive.
Getting bigger could help Roberts in his crash ball game.
I swear when he finally takes over as the Team Doctor (come on its inevitable) he will still have his licence and be a back up choice for Gats come match day.
match day 23+1
