Played 5 games so far. All my opponents had the same number of fans as me. How could they program it? Match players if the number of fans are equal (instead finding the match in the division)? How stupid the EA programmers and testers are?

Amateur coding. More like a hot fix. Probably they can't figure out the bug in the previous version. So has to make a hot fix like this.
I got 1 with a slight change (around 1.5k)so its not fixed, more likely search starts from your fan count and widens to linits of your division, probably cycles a few times before going out of division

Yes, I also noticed we get a match only if we have the same number of fans which is shit logic!
It doesn't explain why people couldn't even start the first match. There should have been tons of people on the exactly same number of fans.
Also, it doesn't explain how those people at the top of the leaderboard could still play; they had no people with equal number of fans.

It's obvious those are either placeholder/dummy teams and/or developer teams, who don't intend to play further. They're just there to fill up the ranks until real players, like us, reach better rankings.
Let's say "Paijay" and "Mulana" exist (totally hilarious phoney names).
They somehow started the game before anyone, played furiously (for a few seconds?) and miraculously got 800k fans -- BUT stayed with the same amount of fans from the FIRST minute of launch. Surely, they would've advanced now with the hot fix of matching fans?

That is certainly sadly possible. But wouldn't they have kept on exploiting it? They STARTED as Leg III from the first second. And haven't moved the dial at all.
I'm a regular Top 250 player. I check standings often, and tend to recognise names. The first name I recognise as a regular in past seasons is (currently) number 38, Franklinwen. I believe the previous ones are developer teams used as placeholders, similar to how waiters fill a tip jar with dollar bills in the morning, though they didn't get a customer yet. It's psychological.
This has killed the gameplay. I have not been able to find an opponent after 100+ attempt over 8 hours. There's zero ability to play because the matches aren't being made. No fun at all.
Yah everyone I played had the exact same number of fans as me... they could use like ranges to determine match ups.... 120000 fans - 130000 fans will match up, something like that
