List of all time "World" champions by continent - South America
Fucking hell, I am not looking forward to North America tomorrow night. I've started though, so I'll finish. Oceania, I ain't forgot you baby. Tell u/hommytearns that I remembered Anthony Mundane.
Also, Charles Martin is going to be part of a World champion list tomorrow. So fucking depressing.
This does not include lineal or NYSAC, NBA, IBO, The Ring or any other organisation. I'll do a lineal one at some point.
This list contains every WBC, WBA (regular and super), WBO, IBF & interim belt winners from South America since the sanctioning bodies were founded. The WBA reigns do not include pre-WBA, when it was called the NBA.
#Excel OneDrive Spreadsheet Data
| Country | Individual | Total |
|---|---|---|
| Argentina | 34 | 51 |
| Venezuela | 34 | 50 |
| Colombia | 35 | 39 |
| Brazil | 4 | 9 |
| Peru | 1 | 1 |
| Total | 108 | 150 |
Takeaway notes:
-
Most even and fiercely competitive continent so far. Each of the others has usually had a standout - Japan, United Kingdom, South Africa. Out of 103 Individual champions between Argentina, Colombia and Venezuela, Colombia edge the most by 1 (35) ahead of the others (34).
-
The only division South America doesn't boast a World champion is heavyweight.
-
Leo Gamez, Jorge Linares, Acelino Freitas and r/Boxing god Sergio Martinez have won the most titles in South America with 4 each.
-
30 champions from this continent have won more than one belt. Staggeringly, that's almost a third.
-
Brazil with the population they have as well as the fighting culture really shocked me with just four separate World champions.
-
Amazingly, only five countries have produced World champions - Argentina, Venezuela, Peru, Colombia and Brazil.
-
The continent has produced some of the finest fighters in history - Leo Gamez, Eder Jofre, Carlos Monzon and more.
-
Totals - 108 Individual champions, 150 Total belts held.
