Best Way To Implement a Punishment

this isn't actually a parenting question, it's a technical question.

each of my kids have lines of their own, and the lines are provided to them on condition that, among other things, they pass all their classes. one of my kids has transgressed this condition, so i need to implement the punishment.

the wrinkle is, i don't live with them and they're quite a ways away, so actually yanking the handset and sticking it in the closet is problematic (and his other parent isn't very cooperative).

i don't want to just cancel the line, and i don't have a problem continuing to pay for it; i just want the phone turned off until the punishment has run its course.

what's the best way to accomplish this?

How bout this? Family Allowances https://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-1725

it works great and you can control it from a computer, tablet or phone. I've not used it in a while but it was useful.

Family Allowances doesn't limit data. I checked into this.

Be aware, than even though you're going to be suspending the line, if they have wifi access they can just download another texting app for free. So I'm not sure this would be a good punishment unless you were able to physically take the phone away.

actually, given his autism and related disabilities, i doubt he could manage that. that's why he soaks up so much data. last month he used 132g, which was down from the 154g the previous month.

I wish that we could have parental control to limit speed. It'd be hard to stream Netflix or Snapchat at 64kbps, though calls and texts for emergencies would be fine.

Depending on your router, you can do it on wifi.

If you're not on the One plan, just download a few movies and cut the data to 3g. If they fail the next month, repeat.

Are you on ONE? You can always remove the data plan. ("No data") ... Messaging? I think you can block all incoming messaging. what is it you're trying to accomplish?

I believe you can limit the activity on each phone (via the website control panel); "Block All Messages". They want messages back, follow the rules.

I think you can temporarily suspend a line but Im not sure what the max time is, but Im assuming you can do at least 30 days.

One option is to pick up a SIM (Amazon) and switch the line to that.

Get the Our Pact app -- let's you control which apps work at which time, and you can shut all but phone calls off entirely on a schedule or until you say they get it back.
