If you live on the far suburban edge of Platte County then Weston and Platte City are easier drives and closer than Lee's Summit but I know what you mean.

Then you would have to count Atchison part of KC too since its the same distance away and high plains distillery is based there and they make the best vodka in the midwest, most wanted.

Atchison is further than weston. Leavenworth is a more fair comparison.

As someone who works in the distilling business, I can tell you the government doesn't fuck around with the taxes they collect on booze. We have to account for every drop that we produce and if TTB audits us and we can't, we're screwed.
I work at the ethanol plant in St Joe, and luckily for us, we only produce fuel grade so it's denatured with gasoline before it leaves the premises. However when the IRL switched from methanol to ethanol we were the sole provider of ethanol for the league and they would bring trucks in and load 200 proof and they would have some sort of beauracrat on standby to verify that the tanker had the race spec denaturant in it before loading and then they would sample and check the product before it left the property. No fuckery allowed.
Same goes for breweries. Uncle Sam always, ALWAYS, gets his cut.
