GOG currently has this on sale at the same price, however, there are a ton more players on steam if you want to play online. This game is what Diablo 3 should have been. I love it
Diablo 3 is pretty damn great after 2.0 and especially with the expansion.
Too bad it will never be the Diablo 3 that we should have had.
People that downvote, I'm not saying it's still a bad game. I'm saying that d3 was a huge departure from what d2 and d1 were. It's a decent game that doesn't measure up. If you disagree that's a-ok
Its a great game. It's just not a diablo game, I agree with you on that part.
Yea, it didnn't have that gloomy and scary atmosphere.
All the other games have better end game. Fishing in GRs is lame as fuck.

An ARPG without trading and dynamic character building? I'll pass, thanks...
Trading is overrated.
It might be, but there aren't that many builds for each class still.
Grim Dawn works very well with a controller. You will still want a mouse nearby for inventory management but a controller greatly increases the fun factor and skill since the analog stick allow rotation seemlessly.
Getting a controller to work with Diablo 3 was a pain in the ass. Grim Dawn is plug and play. (Have to check a box)
The game is a steal for the price IMO.
It has an official Steam controller profile too. My wife played exclusively with it and it worked great, even for inventory management.
there are a ton more players on steam if you want to play online.
Do they not play together?
They do not, according to other people here. I haven't played in a while so I can't speak to personal experience.
I can't think of a instance where gog players could play with steam players in any game.
I had no idea. That seems kind of dumb.
Not really. Gog copies are drm free. You could potentially share the file with your friends and everyone could play steam's version for free at the same time if crossplay were enabled.
Not even physical copies allow this.
wait, is gog and steam multiplayer not connected?
No. Crate said that they were going to try and connect it soon... but this was a year or so ago.
If you're coming from Titan Quest to this game, be aware that the mastery system is a bit different. Yes, you can still pick two different classes, however there's also a different skill "web" called "Devotions". You get points to use in this by clearing Shrines around the game map.
I didn't particularly enjoy Grim Dawn when compared to Titan Quest, largely because none of the masteries available particularly spoke to me. I'm very much in the minority there and I definitely feel the game is worth a try - and 50% off is a pretty good price point to jump in. A single playthrough is easily worth that price tag.

To be fair, it is Steampunk vs Fantasy. But not even the Night Blade? It is pretty much your standard Assassin. Or the Shaman? Bummer you didn't get enough of a kick out of it.
Yeah, none of them really "clicked" for me, which is strange because the game has a good variety of available builds. I often go sword/board in multiplayer ARPGs so the team can have a tank, and there are a bunch of options for that in this game. It was just that none of them were a lot of fun for me. I played through the game 4-5 times, so I think that speaks to the quality of the gameplay - even though I didn't particularly like the classes, the gameplay itself was enough to get me to continue in it. I definitely think $12.49 is a worthy price-point for those on the fence about trying it.
I found myself in a similar situation like yours. Always starting new characters, not really finding my place until I made a Shaman/Occultist trying to focus on pets. Because all my points went there, I got active skills to throw around from the component system and holy hell, the game got fun as hell. Poison Bomb skill you can get early on from Mutagenic Ichor changed the game for me and made me completely reconsider the game. Fireball from Searing Embers was also fun compared to the class skills.
I just bought and started the game last night. Already level 12 and, man, you're right about that mutagenic bomb. I stumbled on it by accident and now I don't want to give up the melee weapon I'm using because of it. Makes controlling points much more feasible, especially paired with flashbang or stun jacks.
The upcoming expansion will add Necromancer and Inquisitor to the list of masteries, maybe they'll be more towards your liking ;)
I bought Grim Dawn during Early Access a couple of years back after someone here suggested it and have spent ~500 hours in-game.
It is a very good ARPG based on a modified version of the Titan Quest engine (Arthur Bruno of Crate Entertainment was actually lead gameplay designer for Titan Quest). The technical provenance shows up in things like the dual mastery system. And Crate has delivered far beyond what was originally promised. Anyone who has played Titan Quest or the Torchlight series should enjoy this.
Some highlights of the game:
Oh good. The ending really pissed me off. I wouldn't mind a expansion as i really enjoyed it but was sitting there thinking "What ... the games over? WTF?!"
So you are telling me to wait until the expansion to buy it?
It'll probably get offered for a decent deal when the expansion hits I assume?

Nope.

$12.50 is the lowest it has ever been, according to ITAD, if you ignore that one occasion when it was part of a Humble Monthly for $12.
They could go below 50%, but I don't think it will happen this year. Even at these prices they have sold over a million copies.
I'll say it's an OK ARPG but it definitely lacks the polish of diablo and mechanical depth of POE. I played through it with a friend and initially it's fine and the constellation thing is thematic and cool but many of the points boil down to stat increases and at the end of a constellation are skill modifiers but they don't change the skill more than add like an occasional aoe spike.
Maybe I missed it but there's nothing that changes the fact that all I do is spam my debuff then hold left click, the boss fights are cool and are probably the best boss fights in modern ARPGs but the trash mobs in between are lacking in variety or challenge.
I concur with this -- there are some interesting moments, but truly, I can't say that I overall enjoyed my experience with this game. The main quests are generally a slog and there really aren't that many interesting skills (yes, I looked into whatever build is going to be suggested). In fact, there are a surprising number of absolutely terrible skills that gimp your ability to play well if you choose them.
Overall, a decent effort, but I'd recommend giving this a pass.

This is like a min/max commentary you could use for almost any game with build systems.
Sure you could -- but there is definitely a distinction between min/maxing, wherein there will be ideal builds and less than ideal builds, and the situation in grim dawn, where there are skills -- I'd estimate over 50% of them -- that are so weak or useless compared to other options that it's a wonder why they're in the game at all. That's just bad game design and balancing.

I completely disagree. There are hundreds of builds that are all loads of fun, the quests are the same as every other arpg in existence, and I've never had more fun playing a multiplayer action rpg since Diablo 2. Even on harder difficulties there are rarely skills that cannot be put into an appropriate working build.
One of best game out there, trust me, it's a Gem
Very polished and have all the great aspects, Gameplay, Atmosphere, Challenging, Story, Gore, Loot, Dark Theme, Balanced Classes, Different Mobs,Tons of quests...etc
If you into ARPG then this is one of best ARPG in years
recommend. not that you have to trust some ramdo from reddit.
This game is very similar to Titan Quest, the levering class system is near identical. Great game. I've played POE and Grim Dawn a lot and while I feel POE is deeper game and more complex, Grim Dawn has more soul and I found my self glued for hours at a time while playing GD. Plus GD can be played 100% offline while POE needs to be online all the time
Same price at GOG https://www.gog.com/game/grim_dawn if you want DRM-free version instead of steam.
edit: GOG version uses GOG Galaxy for online play and does not cross play with Steam version at the moment. So if you care about online play Steam version is probably better.
I'd be shocked if the gog and steam version of any game get cross play. Valve is losing out on 4 dollars from your purchase when you buy it on GOG instead of Steam.
I really liked this game, but I think PoE is better, and that's free, so if you like diablo and haven't already tried PoE go try that first.
PoE has a massive update coming that removes the forced replay of the story 3x to reach end game. Quite an improvement so getting into PoE right now isn't the best choice considering it'll be a forced restart for a new player.

I'm seeing some very diverging opinions on this. Some are saying it's fantastic, others are saying it's meh. FWIW I really like ARPGs and enjoyed Diablo 3 more than Path of Exile. Any suggestions?
I think Diablo 3 is probably the better game. The graphics are much better in Diablo 3. Diablo 3 has more gameplay options. Diablo 3 probably has the better online play as well.
That doesnt mean that Grim Dawn is bad. Its got a interesting story line. Its fun to mix and match character builds. The combat is fun. I have 223 hour in the game. I bought it when it was still in Early Access. I recommend the game if you enjoy ARPG.
I agree about your opinion on POE. It just didnt appeal to me.
I haven't played enough of Diablo 3 to dispute your other points, but the graphics are most certainly not better than Grim Dawn's. You may prefer the art style, and that's fine, but from a graphical perspective, GD is definitely better.
Diablo 3 does not have more gameplay options. Each class has maybe... three builds that let you get past the easier torment difficulties. Grim Dawn has hundreds
Edit: learn to downvote properly idiots. I'm tired of people thinking "hurr durr he doesn't agree let's downvote his opinion"
I was talking about Rifts inside Diablo 3. Not so much class options. I do agree that Grim Dawn has more choices when it comes character building.
I do think though that Loot wise nothing beats Diablo 3. They just look fantastic. I like both games for different reasons.
well i mean Grim Dawn has the crucible which is more fun, for me at least. Sure items look cool and shiny in Diablo 3 but they do in Grim Dawn as well when you get good items. I quit Diablo after running hundreds of rifts and it all just kinda melted together...no character diversity its either go one of these 5 builds or you cant progress. Also, the story is alot more compelling and deep in Grim Dawn than the newest iteration of Diablo, i just installed Diablo II a few weeks ago and the difference in pacing and tone is ridiculous, I never felt connected to D3s story at all. Both are fun games, but with mods and all the other stuff out there for Grim Dawn its eaten a helluva lot more of my time.
I was in the same boat as you. I put hundreds of hours in to Diablo 3. When I wanted something new I went to Path of Exile, naturally, because it was so hyped to be what everyone wanted Diablo 3 to be. I tried and tried to get in to PoE and just couldn't.
I actually tried Grim Dawn once about a year-ish ago and liked it a bit but the map was overwhelming me with how massive it is and I felt like I wasn't making much progress and the character stats and building was confusing. But I recently came back to Grim Dawn after doing some studying on it and I have been enjoying it a lot more. It's certainly not perfect, it's trash mobs get a bit repetitive, but late game when you're clearing nearly instantly just like in D3 it doesn't really matter anymore. Boss fights are amazing. Character diversity is REALLY amazing. If you love the game enough you could test different builds for seemingly forever, and they're about to release another 2 different classes or "masteries" making a total of 8. You can go pure one class, or more commonly go hybrid and make some really cool mixes. From an AFK pet master to a rifle wielding madman making everything burn and bleed to death.
I think it's worth a shot, I very much enjoy this game and both Diablo and PoE. Grim Dawn is a little less pretty than Diablo 3 and not as polished but the gameplay and the story are really something amazing.
Any suggestions?
Watch a couple of LPs on youtube and decide if the combat/gameplay is to your liking.
The DLCs will probably be on sale during summer sale. Just saying.
awesome game, worth every cent!
if youre into arpgs this is the game for you.
I enjoyed it. 12.50 is a solid deal. play once at normal and again at hard. use a character planner to design your build for best effect. character can be respeced but not points put into base attributes, so something to be aware of. Fun if you like loot grinding.
Game is great, but AVOID modding. It killed the feeling for me.
If you are coming from poe or D3 and expect a flashy gameplay get ready to be disappointed. This game is slooow paced and there are no fancy or fast skills
Yeah, I found it very boring and returned it right away.

Feel free to thank me.
This game has a lot going for it, but I just couldn't get over the design. Too drab, character armor just didn't look interesting. Great mechanics though! Unfortunately I'm the disgusting creature who likes advancing my character just to make them look cool. YMMV.
The armour actually looks way better at higher levels. It is just early to mid game when you look like a war veteran after months of struggle scavenging anything of use.
Yeah, this. I've also had the initial impression armor looks kinda drab, but once you have characters of sufficient level and enough high-end equipment that changes drastically. My current Druid build looks like someone from an 80's music video who stole costume pieces from a WoW-reenactment and hired Andre3000 to be his stylist, it's a bit ridiculous actually - but in a fun way.
This or titan quest. I'm a diablo fan.
Is grim dawn a right click mostly arpg or are there many skills to use?
Depends on your build. While there are some "left click to victory" builds out there, I currently run a build where I use 5-6 skills constantly.
Good to know thanks. Time to snipe this game from the store
If you like isometric ARPGs but find that...
D3 is too simple and streamlined
PoE makes your head hurt
Torchlight 2 is too cartoonish
Then this is the game for you.
PoE is zoomed in too much and you can't zoom out. It was unplayable for me the first time I saw it.
its the same as Diablo 3 unless youve pressed a wrong button
I played 15 minutes of D3 total and feel the same way.
My friend and I got tired of D3 after 4 seasons in a row and could not really get into TL2 (I played hundreds of hours of TL2 years ago, but couldn't get into the game again this time around). I'm playing titan quest right now solo, but that's also not really grabbing my attention that much. I'm hoping this might go cheaper or same price on the steam store during their summer sale since I have some credit in my steam wallet.
