OpenIV (GTA V mod program) was sent a C&D by Take-Two

OpenIV creator's post on the events: http://gtaforums.com/topic/889348-openiv/

I'll be honest, I don't play GTA V so I have little knowledge of what this program in particular does. However, I didn't notice anything off-color about the mod tool when I (quickly) scanned through the project page, so I'm not sure what Take Two's issue with the tool is.

What's that? Kill the longevity and play value of my own product? Sounds like a great idea!

Rockstar does this all the time, for example they just added APC and if you destroy someone's APC, you have to pay $20k for insurance. Which is great for grifers because it's so expensive to defend yourself.

Nerd3 just did a video on this and apparently OpenIV is a super important backbone for a lot of other mods so in essence Take Two has dealt a serious blow to GTA V's modding community. He suspects (and I have to agree) with their recent statement that they could be milking their fans with micro-transactions for even more money this might be an attempt by Take Two to force everyone to pay them for any unique features and additions that normally would have come from modding.

If all of this is true I seriously think this needs to get more traction because this is some absolute bullshit. We already got Bethesda constantly trying to sneak in the paid mods business and now Take Two just outright banning it by threatening legal action? It really feels like the kind of bullshit KiA exist to bring attention to.

I think you will find yourself at the mercy of the Paid Mods Brigade if you speak too loudly. Apparently free mods are Satan's soft whispers.

I hope the guy just sucks at English, otherwise the forum is suffering from a serious feminism infection.

I hope he means threats of violence.

It's things like this that have the Kerbal Space Program community on edge. That is a game which is vastly improved by mods (covering everything from stricter crew transfer requirements to Alcubierre warp drives) and it's just recently been bought by Take Two.

KSP is safe because Squad is still in control. Take Two is just being used to spread the game onto consoles.

But wasn't it after the original modding/banning fiasco in GTA V a few years back that Rockstar said that they are for people modding the game as long as the mods are not installed if you play online? At least Scripthook V which is used for trainers and a shitton of mods such as the machinima essential Scene Director will not let you access online if SHV is installed. Not only they try to prevent hackers ruining online games but they also safeguard the user for accidentally going online and getting a ban just because they have the mods installed.

Oh, cool. Thanks Take2, for taking away one of my few remaining joys. I wasn't already on edge enough.

Its within their rights to do this is it not?

Nah fuck this, I can already tell what's gonna happen. People are gonna give Rockstar a fucking pass because they have an amazing track record meanwhile, if Bethesda or Ubisoft did something like this we wouldn't just be all "errr it's in their rights though errr."

This is bullshit and Rockstar are being fucking assholes.

If it makes you feel better, Rockstar is on my shitlist for this kind of behavior, plus failing to provide even a modicum of support for other games. Case in point, I bought GTA IV on Steam: not only does it require that I run Games for Windows Live just to save my game, but I also need to use special startup commands to make the game realize that my 8 GB of VRAM is enough to run a years old game.

If you play online you can be banned for having mods simply for single player. For example field of view mods can result in a ban.

Also, if you're banned from Rockstar Social Club, you're banned From Rockstar Social Club... no more Max Payne 3 or Midnight Club, etc.

It's not Rockstar though. It's Take Two Interactive. Rockstar even supports modding of their games

Sure. Doesn't make it any less annoying.

TakeTwo can argue that modding violates their terms of service and thus they are within their rights to ban it and send a C&D to the people making the modding tools. Whether such a clause would stand up in court is debatable. The modders don't want to put the time and money to take TakeTwo to court over this, so they've decided to just pull the download link for their tool and abandon modding GTA V.
