Worst Seasons in the Past 25 Years Part 9: Bentley
Welcome to the Worst Season in the Past 25 Years, a series in which r/CollegeHockey reviews the worst season for all 60 Division I teams over the summer to alleviate the crushing boredom known as the off-season and take a horrific tour down memory lane.
If you are interested in writing an entry for your team, please let me know via PM. I’ll be posting entries on weekdays at approximately at 6 pm Eastern time and will be going in alphabetical order. If an entry is not posted at that time, assume that “real life” has gotten in the way and that I am not able to post. If I am aware in advance that I will not post at 6 pm on a particular day, I will announce it in prior posts as a heads up.
And now.../r/CollegeHockey presents the Bentley Falcons. Bentley were founded in 1977 as a DII team in the ECAC conference down there. They upgraded their program to DI in 1999, joining the Metro Atlantic. Since the 2003-04 season, the Falcons have been part of its successor, Atlantic Hockey.
The worst season that the Falcons have had is…
2001-2002 Record: 4-2-26 (W-D-L); Metro Atlantic: 4-2-20 (W-D-L; 11th/11th)
Wins: @American International, Canisius, @Fairfield, AIC
Draws: Army, @Iona
Losses: @Alabama Huntsville (x2), @Quinnipiac*, Fairfield*, Holy Cross, @Canisius, @Mercyhurst, Canisius, @Holy Cross, Holy Cross, @Army, Mercyhurst (x2), Air Force^, UConn^, Iona, Sacred Heart, @Sacred Heart, Quinnipiac, @Quinnipiac, UConn, @UConn, Fairfield, @AIC, @Quinnipiac, @UConn
*Part of the Quinnipiac Cup
^Part of the UConn Classic
Biggest Beatdown: Sacred Heart 9 - Bentley 1
Head Coach: Jim McAdam
This was McAdam’s final season in charge of the Bentley Falcons (and the Falcons’ penultimate as a member of Metro Atlantic). Steve Tobio led the team in scoring with 14 goals and 19 assists (the first time in this series in which one person was both leading scorer and lead assist-maker).
The Falcons were the road to kick-off the season against Alabama Huntsville. Participation in the Quinnipiac Cup did not fare any better, with losses against the hosts and Fairfield. A loss to Holy Cross was followed by a win at American International, the first of the season.
Bentley conceded nine goals away to Canisius and six away to Mercyhurst. The following weekend was a split home series with Canisius. A quick home-and-home with Holy Cross was in defeat, as was game one in the series against Army West Point.
December started with game two in the Army series, which ended in a tie. A home series against Mercyhurst led to the Falcons being swept before a nice couple of weeks off in preparation for the UConn Classic. Once there, two defeats to Air Force and UConn ended the year.
Bentley had a home-and-home series with Iona, only getting one tie. Two more home-and-home series against Sacred Heart and Quinnipiac ended in no wins or ties. In February, an additional home-and-home against UConn also ended in defeat. Two split series with Fairfield and AIC created a bit of hope for the end of the season before losing away to Quinnipiac and UConn.
After this season, McAdam left the Falcons and was replaced by current coach Ryan Soderquist. Under Soderquist, nearly all seasons have at least ten wins; occasionally the 15 win barrier is broken. Unfortunately, Bentley has not been able to win the regular season title, the tournament championship or a single Ice Dance appearance. Hopefully they improve so they may do these things. A new arena for the Falcons is being built, with a scheduled date of the middle of the next season.
For Week 2 of this series, we will look at the worst seasons in recent memory for the following school: Boston College. Once again, if you are interested in doing the entry for your favorite school, shoot me a PM. Your school, name, and date will be added at the end of each post to serve as a reminder. So far, the following people have inquired about a spot:
