Review #1 - Angel's Envy Rye

First real whiskey review ever. Started on Bourbon about 6 months ago usually in cocktails and that's gotten me tumbling down the American Whiskey rabbit hole. I've been reading the sub for a few months and it seems like the best way to develop the palate is to write it down... so here goes. Feedback welcome!

This bottle was a gift and I've heard this is a controversial whiskey on account of the finishing and sweetness. 100 proof, 95% rye mash finished in rum casks... and holy hell was it the right thing to sip on after dinner.

Nose: iced gingerbread, nutmeg, cardamom, cinnamon, cake batter, caramel, sugar, very faint alcohol. Deep nosing brought the alcohol forward, but it wasn't too aggressive. Nice nostril burn that carried the flavours well.

Palate: round, rich, supple, sweet. Definitely not subtle, and not really that complex. Just layers of rich sugary spiced baked goods that marry really well with the rye spice. The sugar offsets the burn nicely.

Finish: long and warm, with rye spice, ginger, pepper, nutmeg, cinnamon.

Rating: really freaking good. Very pleasant and awfully unique. At this point I'm not going to do a numeric scale... seems like pseudoscientific hogwash. Instead, I'll just keep a running list of what I would like better or worse. That'll probably get tedious after a hundred reviews, but at the one mark it's awfully manageable!

Angel's Envy Rye - tl;dr: rich and sweet, perfect in lieu of dessert.
